It may not be apparent from the title, so this is to clarify that Handbook of Surveillance Technologies is not an engineering text. It does not include circuit board diagrams on how to construct or select surveillance devices for specific applications.
Instead, as there was no comprehensive survey of the field to put the depth and breadth of surveillance into perspective in its historical context, this book was written to fill that gap. It also corrects a number of historical inaccuracies in the 'invention record' by including information the author gleaned from original patents, scientific white papers, personal letters by inventors and their associates, and thousands of government documents released according to the Freedom of Information Act. Bell didn't invent the telephone, nor was radar invented in WWII. These and other inventions had earlier precedents that the author was the first to document in the first edition (information that has now spread through the Web but which was not generally known at the time).
Handbook of Surveillance Technologies is suitable for jourrnalists, privacy advocates, sociologists, law enforcement and military trainees, those interested in the evolution of surveillance technologies, and others who need an overview and foundation for understanding the background, regulations, and emerging trends in surveillance. If you are seeking a text for designing and building surveillance hardware, it is recommended you consult other sources.
