Ceramic and natural stone tile surfaces add both functionality and beauty and can be used effectively both inside and outside a home. Whether you're looking for something as simple as tile for a kitchen floor, bathroom shower stall, or a patio, tile options range from basic choices to fully customized and handmade decorative pieces that are works of art in and of themselves.

At first glance setting tile may seem like a big job, and some installations are, but success with most tile jobs is a matter of common sense, getting good advice, practicing techniques unfamiliar, and following the instructions. Guiding you through the tiling process from design to execution is what Tiling 1-2-3 is all about. On the following pages you'll find more than 80 step-by-step installation, repair, and maintenance projects for your home. You'll also find plenty of tiling tips and good advice that will save you time and money, and make every job easier

Ooooo... Pictures...
By Ken
This book is more or less useless on it's own. It tries to make tiling look really simple and straightforward. Tiling is actually not rocket science at all, but you really do need to spend time up front deciding what you are going to do. It isn't a weekend project. Get a real book written by someone who actually lays tile professionally and not just by people who sell the latest half-baked do it yourself supplies. I recommend "Tile Your Word" or "Setting Tile". Both top notch books. In fact, get both - given how expensive tile is it'll be worth the money.

This book does have some nice pictures of some steps though. That's about all I can recommend it for.

Conservation: Linking Ecology, Economics, and Culture, by Monique Borgerhoff Mulder, Peter Coppolillo

Nearly 90 percent of the earth's land surface is directly affected by human infrastructure and activities, yet less than 5 percent is legally "protected" for biodiversity conservation--and even most large protected areas have people living inside their boundaries. In all but a small fraction of the earth's land area, then, conservation and people must coexist. Conservation is a resource for all those who aim to reconcile biodiversity with human livelihoods. It traces the historical roots of modern conservation thought and practice, and explores current perspectives from evolutionary and community ecology, conservation biology, anthropology, political ecology, economics, and policy. The authors examine a suite of conservation strategies and perspectives from around the world, highlighting the most innovative and promising avenues for future efforts.

Exploring, highlighting, and bridging gaps between the social and natural sciences as applied in the practice of conservation, this book provides a broad, practically oriented view. It is essential reading for anyone involved in the conservation process--from academic conservation biology to the management of protected areas, rural livelihood development to poverty alleviation, and from community-based natural resource management to national and global policymaking.

Review
Winner of the 2008 Gerald L. Young Book Award in Human Ecology

From the Inside Flap
"Balancing the rights of local people with the obligation to preserve viable ecosystems for future generations is the single most pressing challenge confronting global citizens in the twenty-first century. In this book, Borgerhoff Mulder and Coppolillo provide a lucid and admirably interdisciplinary synthesis of anthropological, biological, and economic perspectives essential to scientifically enlightened dialogue in this domain. Conservation: Linking Ecology, Economics, and Culture grew out of a pioneering course titled 'People and Conservation,' but this unique synthesis will be as helpful to policy makers and park managers as it will be to teachers and students interested in conservation biology and anthropology. It is a book that deserves to be widely adopted."--Sarah B. Hrdy, author of Mother Nature: A History of Mothers, Infants, and Natural Selection

"This is an excellent and much needed book that finally brings together the social and anthropogenic insights needed to push conservation biology to a higher and more pragmatic level. I was hooked from the preface on, and found interesting and thoughtful ideas throughout."--Andrew P. Dobson, Princeton University

"This is an extremely interesting, well-written, wide-ranging, and very timely book. It covers a vast range of literature at the crucial yet rarely synthesized interface of biology and the social sciences, and should be very widely read. It is particularly helpful in the way it sets out the background to key debates, clearing up often-confused terminology and muddled concepts."--Andrew Balmford, University of Cambridge

"This book clearly and expertly elucidates the fact that the lessons from previous mistakes and successes in the relatively young field of conservation biology can point the way toward a more systematic, more comprehensive, and more socially acceptable approach when dealing with present and future conservation endeavors. It will be of great value to anyone sincerely interested in how humans can live with wildlife and wild places, and to professionals who seek answers to the difficult questions regarding how to go about conservation."--Alan Rabinowitz, Wildlife Conservation Society

"This book offers an astonishingly diverse, unprecedented compilation of information on efforts to balance biodiversity conservation with local development. Bridging a range of disciplines, the authors move fluidly from the history of U.S. environmentalism to contemporary efforts across the globe, from international treaties on climate change to case studies of indigenous management. This book belongs on the core reading list for university programs on conservation biology, sustainable development, and international environmental affairs."--Lisa Naughton, University of Wisconsin, Madison

Broadens your conservation perspectives
By Nantan Lupan
This was a required text for an environmental anthropology class I attended last semester at BSU. If you're looking for a single place to get brought up to speed on conservation practices and/or environmental issues on a macro level, this book is for you. Most of the information presented by Mulder and Coppolillo is straight forward and unbiased.

Better the second time around.
By BlueBird123
I remember being disappointed the first time I read this over ten years ago, but my expectations for Dan Simmons were a lot higher then. Since then; reading his books has turned into an ordeal. "The Terror", as an example, was just a boring waste which could have used an editor. I read reviews of his other books and they are not even at the level of "The Terror", so I assume he has really gone downhill and is just full-filling a contract with his publisher (I really don't know).

Olympos was the last "fun" book written by Dan Simmons ( in my opinion). The story has unresolved plot points, but I think the intention was to wrap those up in a 3rd sequel (which may never happen). The book is high adventure with fun characters and literary references. Quantum manipulation disguised as magic and divine power, wielded by ancient greek gods, monsters and characters from Shakespeare. As I already mentioned, some things just aren't explained, but Simmons either got burnt out, lost interest or there is/was supposed to be a sequel.

Simmons is probably the best SF writer out there when he is on point. The guy is higly intelligent plus he can write and tell a story. I hope he can rediscover his muse

Olympos is Readable, but not what I expected from Simmons
By RV
I thoroughly enjoyed Ilium and was very much looking forward to reading its sequel, Olympos. The worlds that Simmons constructed in Ilium were vivid, rich and exciting and knowing Simmons' work I was eagerly anticipating the grand finale. It never seemed to happen. Instead, Simmons seems to lose control of the story shortly after the book begins: while Olympos, like Ilium, contains many spectacular images and scenes, they just don't seem to fit together very well.

My biggest disappointment was that the book just left me unsatisfied. Olympos promises a lot: the origin of the Greek gods, the story behind Setebos, a final confrontation with Caliban, the purpose behind the Voynix (if you've read Ilium, you know what I mean), but it never seems to deliver the goods. Sure, you get some explanations, but they just seem banal and don't fit very well into a coherent story. This is not the grand Simmons style.

The book's conclusion just seems hurried or even lazy. Here is an example of a loose plot thread that people that have already read Olympos would understand: how did Noman get to Earth? The conclusion is riddled with such loose ends. It's almost as if Simmons was past his deadline and had to submit an unfinished manuscript.

So while this book has its moments, and it was mostly fun to read, as someone who really loves Simmons' work, I reluctantly have to give Olympos only 3 stars. If it were any other author, I would probably go as low as 2.

A real disappointment
By B. Talbot
I really enjoyed the first book (Illium). This book, while structurally similar (several stories going on in parallel), doesn't manage to be nearly as interesting, entertaining, or compelling. In this book, I found that the constant shifting from storyline to storyline kept me from getting too involved in any of the stories. And many of the characters are total cliches -- all the "higher powers" talk in unnecessary riddles, the evil creature feeds on pain, etc.

Although a lot of other reviewers complained about the author not tying up loose ends, the book is even worse when he DOES explain things. Most of the actions which really drive the plot (the actions of the gods especially, but also the actions of the post-humans and Prospero) make little to no sense. The reasons we are given for them acting are patently ridiculous. I don't think that the setting or "techology" of a sci-fi story needs to be believable, but the characters do. The main characters in this book are, but they end up being almost completely irrelevant to what happens in the book.

About half way through I had to force myself to keep reading. I was extremely annoyed when I was finished.
