Cardiologist Agatston (The South Beach Diet) follows up his blockbuster book on weight-loss with this volume of more than 200 recipes, a number of which are culled from the kitchens of chefs in Miami Beach and other cities. Each recipe is designated as Phase 1, 2 or 3 to help readers discern the segment of the diet for which they are appropriate. Carbohydrates are off-limits during Phase 1, but "good carbs" (like whole grains) are gradually reintroduced in Phase 2. Phase 3 segues into a less restrictive but still healthy eating regimen. About the Author

Arthur Agatston, M.D., is a preventive cardiologist and associate professor of medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. In 1995, Dr. Agatston developed the South Beach Diet to help his cardiac and diabetes patients improve their blood chemistries and lose weight. Since then, his book The South Beach Diet and its companion titles have sold more than 22 million copies. Dr. Agatston has published more than 100 scientific articles and abstracts in medical journals, and recently he received the prestigious Alpha Omega Award from New York University Medical Center for outstanding achievement in the medical profession. He lives in Miami Beach with his wife, Sari.

Saved $10 on Hard Cover Book

I got this used like new and it came in MINT condition for just over $9 and free prime shipping. This is for the hard cover book, it is larger than most books which I like as it is easily accessed from the kitchen counter reader. I tried using the digital editions but found it too cumbersome and had to print out a lot of information wasting ink, thus wasting a lot of money.

I highly recommend and do suggest you look at the used like new books, mine looks brand new and saved me over $10.00.

Best Diet Ever - without hunger , but with variety and taste

Wow this is a diet I can follow and enjoy without being hungry and sacrificing taste. I love to cook an I bought this book along with several other South Beach cookbooks and diet books. The recipes are easy and straight forward and are categorized as Phase 1, Phase 2 or Phase 3.

I love the simplicity of the South Beach Diet

I use many of the recipes in this book. This diet has helped my type 1 diabetic husband control his blood sugars which in turn has curbed his moodiness (highly related to what we eat) as well as drop 10 pounds. It has helped me (a sweet's addict) take control of my cravings and fill full. I love the simplicity of the South Beach Diet.

Detailed notes are provided on distribution and habitat, and discussions under the family and genus descriptions place the New Zealand flora in the context of the world liverwort and hornwort flora. To complement the descriptions, 172 black-and-white plates illustrate details of many of the species and 101 color images illustrate almost all of the 60 genera in this volume. Volume 1 also includes a detailed Introduction, which presents a history of exploration of the New Zealand flora; provides a detailed overview of the region s climate, geology, and vegetation; and includes a special contribution on endophytic fungi associates in New Zealand liverworts and their ecological and evolutionary significance. When this three-volume flora is completed, it will be the first flora for these two groups of bryophytes since Hooker s 1864 1867 Handbook of the New Zealand Flora.

About the Author
John Engel is curator of bryophytes at the Field Museum, Chicago. He has worked mainly on New Zealand liverworts since 1980, publishing many revisions of New Zealand liverwort families and genera such as Schistochilaceae, Clasmatocolea, Lepidozia, Telaranea, and Balantiopsis since then. He also has worked on the austral South American liverwort flora, publishing floras of the Falkland Islands/Islas Malvinas and Brunswick Peninsula. David Glenny is a taxonomist at the Allan Herbarium, Landcare Research, Lincoln. He has worked on both flowering plants and liverworts, and has published a checklist of the New Zealand liverworts and hornworts and a computer-interactive key to the Australasian liverwort and hornwort genera.

Voices of a Nation as Rather Bland Media History

The grammer and overall literary style is the least of the problems with this text. Overall it is a reflection of the mass media that it portends to be chronicling. Its factual inaccuracies, lack of historical depth, perpensity towards over-simplification, combined with the bad writing all conspire to make this text an example of the inadequacies of the mass media that pervades society, while providing very little real understanding of what the media has meant to the development of American society. Understandably, it is one of the few texts to deal with the subject and it does make a noble effort at synthesing a great deal of information, but higher demands of both grammer style and factual accuracy should have been placed upon it. As a high school text it may work, but I find it severely lacking in the meat of true historical analysis and understanding of the media within American society. One would find a much better historical analysis of the media in Michael Schudson's "Discovering the News." Though limited in scope, it provides the historical and social analysis that this book is sorely lacking.

Just terrible

This book was an assigned reading and it was the most boring, difficult, and unfocused textbook I have ever had the misfortune to read. If I could give a rating of less than a star I would. Subsections in chapter were very difficult to follow and content was so difficult to follow that I have barely any memory of what was actually said even after immediately reading a section multiple times. Also aesthetically this book was atrocious, the font size and organization made it very difficult to read as well. Maybe drop the class that assigns this book so you don't have to suffer.

Jeff Galloway was an average teenage runner who kept learning and working harder, until he became an Olympian. He is the author of the best-selling running book in North America (Galloway's Book on Running) and is a Runners World columnist, as well as an inspirational speaker for more than 200 running and fitness sessions each year. Get "Galloway's Book on Running" instead

Not a bad book but I would recommend getting "Galloway's book on Running" instead. It is more detailed and has all of the information included in his new book and more. I also found it to be better organized. The only attraction of Galloway's 5K/10K book is the trendier photos he has included, but I don't think this justifies the purchase.

Just what it purports to be

I'm not sure what the other reviewers were expecting from this book, but it seems to be just what it claims to be: a focused look at training for 5K and 10K races with training plans and some more detailed training advice.

I disagree that it's just for beginners, but it does aim at Galloway's target audience of runners who embrace the walk/run philosophy; if that's not your bag Galloway's probably not the author you need to seek out.

I'm training for a 10K and it was just what I was looking for.

If you are "not a runner" and want to complete a short local run this is the perfect book. All of Galloway's material is excellent. Google "run, walk, run" for more information about his running method.

Not as good as i expected

The reason I bought this book was because I was a Lee Childs fan, and he gave this book a rave review. Prior to ordering this book, i expected it to be something similar to the Jack Reacher series, however throughout this book I was disappointed. The first person point of view threw me a little, but overall the storyline was interesting and the plot development was also quite good.

Superhero Nick saves the day

High tech thriller with what borders on comic book action. Nick's nephew is a comic book fan and Nick is his caped crusader who dives in to save the day when his father goes missing. A lot of action, a complicated plot involving mysterious corporations with guns for hire. I am giving it 4 although I hovered on 3. It is well written and paced. The characters are a little cheesy and it is full of toys for boys but I did enjoy it. It strikes me as a good movie plot - lots of action with only the love interest missing.

Great For Newbies; So-So for Experienced Shooters

Well, I was intrigued by the title, and the price was low enough, so I decided to splurge! The book is super basic when it comes to photography; a seasoned or pro shooter will get bored with a lot of this book. I was pleased by the sharing of apps and usage. there are thousands of iPhone apps for post processing, sharing etc. I have been looking at the books and trying to weed through and find the apps that are the most commonly used.

For an amateur, a teen, or others who have little to no experience with image making, this book will do a great job of getting you started. Repleat with great images, Hollimgsworth shares some great moments, as well as some supurb techniques. However, if you have ever shot with a DSL or quality Rangefinder, this will probably be a good book for a few ideas, and some nice pics to look at. But, I always tell people - even if it is simplistic - if you get one idea or new technique - or if the bloody book just makes you THINK - thin it's worth it!

If you are looking for a book that will explain some of the technical aspects of the iPhone ------ this is not the book for you. You will have to figure out on your own how to get from point A to point B, when trying to take some of those spectacular shots. A very basic (small) book for absolute beginners.

Fascinating Introduction to the Generalized Continuum Hypothesis

The Philosophy of Set Theory - An Historical Introduction to Cantor's Paradise by Mary Tiles is a fascinating mix of mathematics, mathematical logic, and philosophy that should appeal to (and challenge) both mathematics and philosophy majors at the undergraduate and graduate level.

The focus is on the Generalized Continuum Hypothesis (GCH); the reader will meet topics like numbering the continuum, developing Cantor's transfinite ordinal and cardinal numbers, evaluating the ZF axioms underlying set theory, and examining the work of Frege and Russell.

The first four chapters (The Finite Universe; Classes and Aristotelian Logic; Permutations, Combinations, and Infinite Cardinalities; and Numbering the Continuum) provide a historical, philosophical, and mathematical context for the more challenging chapters that follow. Some readers may wish to skip familiar sections although I found these early chapters to be quite engaging.

Chapter 5 - Cantor's Transfinite Paradise is a good, standalone introduction to Cantor's transfinite ordinal and cardinal numbers and to the General Continuum Hypothesis (GCH).

Chapter 6 - Axiomatic Set Theory is another good standalone chapter. Mary Tiles introduces the Zermelo-Fraenkel axioms that underlie modern set theory and develops a restatement of the GCH in the language of the ZF axioms.

Chapter 7 - Logical Objects and Logical Types delves deeply into the work of Frege and Russell. This was not the first time that I had encountered Russell's ramified type hierarchy, but nonetheless I still found this section slow going.

Chapter 8 - Independence Results and the Universe of Sets assumes substantial familiarity with model theory. Specific topics include Godel's constructible sets, cardinals and ordinals in models, inner models, and generic sets. Readers can either browse this technical chapter or omit it if they are willing to accept on trust the independence of the generalized continuum hypothesis and of the axiom of choice from the remaining Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory.

The final chapter, Mathematical Structure - Construct and Reality, summarizes the key philosophic issues underlying not only the generalized continuum hypothesis, but also with set theory in general and with the theory of transfinite numbers in particular.

I thoroughly enjoyed this introduction to Cantor's transfinite numbers. Mary Tiles has created an intriguing examination of the generalized continuum hypothesis.

Wonderful

I'm a math enthusiast with no formal training in math. I've only studied finance/econ. So we use some areas of math heavily, but don't tend to play around with the more pure analysis of math. I was enamored by set theory in the past, but the books I bought were just too intense. I lacked not only the background, but also the time to teach myself the intense complexity of high level set theory. However, I absolutely loved the insight even basic set-theory analysis offered me into calculus, which I gained from the back four pages of a game theory textbook I owned!

This book was wonderful. It was conceptually challenging, and not uncommon for me to spend 5 minutes on a page. At the same time, it's the type of book a clever person without an intense math background could take to a coffee shop. I also found the historical philosophy parts of the book fascinating, and offering a wonderful foundation for the reasons new models and ideas were formed.

I initially found this book at a bookstore, and decided not to buy it, as I made the pretentious observation the author/professor did not teach at a 'prestigious school.' I then doubled back and made the impulse purchase after getting hooked on one of the chapters in the middle of the book, and decided to give it a proper shot. I have to say, I absolutely love this book. The insights into critical analysis of algebra/geometry/infinite series, has legitimately helped me in my work in game theory. While I hope to eventually study a high level course in real-analysis, this book manages to be both captivating and as rigorous as possible without creating a full-blown mathematical textbook.

I highly recommend it to anyone who loves set theory OR philosophy, and wants to self-study more (PS: If you're a philosopher with no math background, I still suggest you buy this book. The best way for philosopher to learn math is to start in areas that overlap with philosophy as opposed to being discouraged from college courses that focus on boring exam based computation rather than critical analysis).

Excellent book! Having some background in mathematics and philosophy will definitely help. I have been interested in these topics since the seventies and have never found a book as informative and interesting as this! I have found good philosophical books that were mathematically deficient and good mathematical books that were philosophically na�ve. This book is a rare find!

This volume collects more recent essays that first appeared in a variety of languages in publications in Zurich, Madrid, Stockholm, Frankfurt, Helsinki and London. Since very few readers, even Berger fanatics, will have the linguistic skills to have experienced these texts in their original translated versions, it is useful to have them collected and available here in English. The 24 essays include impressions of artists such as Rembrandt, Degas, Michelangelo, Kahlo and Brancusi. There are the familiar farmyard observations from Berger as the rural dweller in the French Alps. Others, like the one titled "The Chauvet Cave" after a French site of prehistoric art, seem diffuse and free-form rather than focusing on a single subject. On Rembrandt, Berger is in his element, as if speaking about someone he knew personally: "obstinate, dogmatic, cunning, capable of a kind of brutality. Do not let us turn him into a saint." Some of the essays integrate the author's now-shaky memory, as when he writes, "I have the impression, that just after Brancusi's death in 1957, I visited his studio...." And he manages to get off yet another shot against his pet peeve Francis Bacon, in whose art, according to Berger, "pain is watched through a screen, like soiled linen being watched through the round window of a washing machine." Such overstrenuous attacks on a demonstrably major painter are tedious, but most of the present book, integrating the author's own aging and physical decay, rings as true as the rest of his much-appreciated work. (Dec. 28) Forecast: This book is a sure thing for Berger's regular readers and for larger campus art collections. For an extra $8.50, though, casual readers may prefer to pick up the above Selected, revealing the writer in his fierce prime and providing more than twice as much material.

For some fifty years, the reclusive British writer John Berger has thought a great deal about art and artists, and this collection of essays includes a moving tribute to Frida Kahlo and a brilliant meditation on the achievement of the Italian painter Giorgio Morandi. But everything Berger has written—essays, novels, criticism, screenplays—has been filled with his passionate concern for what used to be called the state of man. That preoccupation is on every page here, whether he is recalling the patience of Antonio Gramsci or discussing Degas's nudes. When Berger was young, his urgent left-wing politics sometimes thrust him into the role of provocateur. Now he is no less committed to making the hidden visible, but his sensibility has widened and deepened; his exegesis of the significance for us of the Fayum portraits, discovered in Egypt in the late eighteen-hundreds, is especially piercing. Berger is one of the few writers who answer questions we don't know to ask.

The Shape of a Pocket

This is one of the most extraordinary books I've ever read. All of Berger's writing is provocative, but this collection is particularly marvelous. I find myself picking this book up to read and reread the essays, over the years. It is a book that fills the heart, engages the mind, and changes one's way of seeing.
