Pacific Odyssey, by Gwenda Cornell

The South Pacific Islands conjure dreams of romantic charm and escape from the pressures of modern life - but is this a true picture of real life on the Islands today? Gwenda Cornell sailed to these Islands to discover the quality of life, history and culture of the peoples who inhabit these remote and beautiful places.

Sailing with her family on the yacht Aventura, Gwenda explores many corners of the Pacific that can still only be reached by sea. The odyssey takes her to the mysteries of Easter Island, to Samoa and to the descendants of the Bounty mutineers on Pitcairn. Gwenda witnesses history in the making in Tuvalu's birth as a nation and finds the last royal nose-flute player in Tonga.

The exuberance with which the Pacific Islanders enjoy their lives bears witness to Gwenda's final analysis that 'the South Pacific remains a peaceful oasis in a troubled world and the "Pacific Way" can serve as an inspiration to those who live in a fast-moving, competitive society.'

Review
Interesting and unique Sailing Today Whether Gwenda Cornell is describing the independence celebrations of Tuvalu... or the splendor of a sunset over a tranquil lagoon, she does so with enough passion and expertise to make you wish you were there too. Sailing magazine This attractive, illustrated paperback, written with all the authority, affection and respect of one who has "been there", is most engaging Cruising

About the Author
Gwenda Cornell and her husband Jimmy (bestselling author of World Cruising Routes) spent three years in the Pacific during a six-year circumnavigation. Whilst Jimmy has written about the practical aspects of long-distance cruising, helping others to achieve their dreams, Gwenda has written about the same routes and destinations from the viewpoint of someone fascinated by the people and places found there.

It made me want to travel so bad, I can't focus at work
By A Customer
I stumbled across this book by accident in my father's bookshelf, and started reading it on a rather uneventful Sunday afternoon. I have always been interested in sailing, but this book really lit a fire under me to go cruising. I've since re-read this book and am still planning my dream cruise to the south pacific. The book talks about the Cornell family (parents and 2 young kids) spending 3 years sailing in the pacific. their story of visiting Pitcairn's Island forced me to reread Mutiny on the Bounty. It is a delightful read, and makes me wish my parents had taken me on a long sailing journey as a child. By the way, Gwenda is married to Jimmy Cornell, who has written a number of cruising books. Pacific Odyssey is a great read, but beware, you may not be able to get rid of the cruising bug. I know I haven't.

Insider's View
By Michael F. Herrmann
Her husband dreamed of sailing off to see the world so when he decided to do it, she went with him. They took their two children ages 7 and 9 (or thereabouts) and spent six years afloat; three of them in the Pacific. Her observations are well-written and provide perspective on what many of us imagine as an idyllic lifestyle. Throughout she presents a positive view while adding bits of reality: making friends while on the go and having to say goodbye; worrying about the safety of their possessions when they leave the boat; the challenges of finding fresh fruit and vegetables.

A people person, she writes about their interactions rather than the technical aspects. Not as lurid as I'd hoped, but more updated than Captain Cook's accounts. She's enough of an anthropologist that one can look up the traditional dances she names on Youtube.

In the end, the difficulties of raising children entering puberty, especially, it seemed, the daughter, led them landward.
