The inspiration for the USA Network series Shooter -- "... A harsh, visceral, novel of conspiracy and betrayal by veteran author Stephen Hunter... a distrubing mix that plays on our sense of history while at the same time it appeals to our darkest fantasies of rough justice." - Chicago Tribune

He was one the best Marine snipers in Vietnam. Today, twenty years later, disgruntled hero of an unheroic war, all Bob Lee Swagger wants to be left alone and to leave the killing behind.

But with consummate psychological skill, a shadowy military organization seduces Bob into leaving his beloved Arkansas hills for one last mission for his country, unaware until too late that the game is rigged.

The assassination plot is executed to perfection—until Bob Lee Swagger, alleged lone gunman, comes out of the operation alive, the target of a nationwide manhunt, his only allies a woman he just met and a discredited FBI agent.

Now Bob Lee Swagger is on the run, using his lethal skills once more—but this time to track down the men who set him up and to break a dark conspiracy aimed at the very heart of America.

From Publishers Weekly
Bob Lee Swagger, jungle-smart hillbilly and premier shootist, explodes as a thinking man's Rambo when Hunter's ( The Day Before Midnight ) canny plot overcomes the barrage of high-tech ballistics data in this otherwise satisfying thriller. Swagger's sniper kills were legendary in Vietnam until an enemy bullet sent him into seclusion at his home in the Arkansas mountains. Retired Col. Schreck lures him back into "the World" on the pretense that he will be testing new bullets, but instead presses him into his special "Agency" unit. Swagger's job is to predict which site on the president's upcoming speaking tour a professional sniper would choose for an assassination attempt--so Schreck's unit can prevent it. Swagger calls the hit just right but is shot and framed in the assassination by Schreck's men. Only FBI agent and sniper ace Nick Memphis believes that Swagger is innocent. Memphis and Swagger trace the real assassin through the shootist network, making clever use of gun-lore magazines. They take on FBI bureaucrats, Schreck's nasties, Salvadoran death squads and local law agencies to get to the final showdown. While the novel's firearms details may be daunting to non-NRA members, the characters, plot and courtroom finale will leave readers wrung out.

From Library Journal
Two men, one determined to maintain his reclusive life in the Arkansas mountains, the other fiercely dedicated to remaining part of the FBI, are drawn together in an effort to clear their names and stay alive during an intricate cover-up of an unauthorized mercenary maneuver in a Latin American country. Bob Lee Swagger, or Bob the Nailer as he was known in Vietnam, is a sniper par excellence. Because of a war injury, he devotes his time to maintaining his marksmanship and avoiding the outside world. These skills and his loner status make him an ideal target for a pseudogovernmental group planning an assassination as part of the cover-up. Nick Memphis, pursuing an investigation from which he has been warned by his FBI superiors, stumbles onto facts about Swagger that force him to go undercover with him. Tautly written by the author of The Day Before Midnight (Bantam, 1989), the plot makes a number of turns before swooping to a conclusion where patriotism and personal integrity triumph. Recommended for popular fiction collections.

4 ½ stars. Last half is good action suspense.

For the first 240 pages (42%) I was depressed and stressed. I had trouble sleeping at night. It was too much hopeless helpless victim feel because innocent man Bob Lee was framed for murder and on the run. THEN it changed and the rest of the book was exciting and hard to put down. Bob Lee was on a mission of retribution -- revenge. The bad guys were worried. There was a happy ending for the good guys which I liked. But I did not like one thing at the end. I did not understand why someone destroyed evidence.

There are a lot of technical details about rifles and guns. Some readers will like that, others won’t. I don’t know anything about guns but it sounded good to me.

Someone compared Bob Lee to Jack Reacher. The Bob Lee story was more realistic. Reacher requires more suspending disbelief. Also Reacher doesn’t have the depressing and stressful effect that caused me to feel bad for a couple days.

Bob Lee Swagger was a top sniper in the Vietnam war. This story begins twenty years later. Bob lives with his dog in the Arkansas mountains. The second hero/good guy is Nick an FBI agent whose boss Howard cares about appearances instead of substance. Howard is like systemic poison.

Stephen Hunter is an author that grabs your imagination in such a way that he takes you into the complex minds of his characters. This story is a testament to true American heroes who step up when called upon even against their better judgment. A sniper for his country until disabled by a shot from another sniper, he believes it is his duty to protect the President of USA. Manipulated & then framed for a murder he did not commit there is satisfaction when the scheme unravels with a great ending. I have a paper back book of Point Of Impact that I've now replaced with Kindle version as the story hasn't grown old, however, the pages are getting worn. Read the book first then watch the movie..don't try to compare just enjoy !!!

The book is ALWAYS better than the movie. This one absolutely proves it.

I've loved the movie Shooter and watch it over and over. So I finally read the book. Keep in mind the movie is BASED on the book and not an exact replica. Stephen Hunter did a fantastic job researching the very technical tactical aspects of a true sniper both in US military terms and LEO terms. Even knowing the base story so well from the movie this book has so many ups, downs and blind alleys it is a great read. I can't wait to start the next Bob Lee book and see where they go from here! I always wanted another Bob Lee movie. I'm glad it ended where it did, but as a fan I always wanted to know where they went and what they did after. Now's my chance! Don't get scared off by the length, this book reads fast. My wife kids me that I'm a slow reader and I had this one done in four days. That's a record for me!
