I love the whole series
By Patrick
I started the series with the Symposium, which I finished (I read the Symposium in Ancient Greek! How cool is that?). Then I started the Crito. I'm flying through it; it's clear that my experience with the Symposium really improved my Greek. Here's what I love about this whole series:
--There's a tremendous amount of care taken, well beyond the amount I've seen in other textbooks or editions of Greek texts for learners. Typos are extremely rare, and the Greek has been so carefully checked there's never that feeling of "wait, is this some weird aorist or just a mistake?"
--These are suitable for anyone from, I'd say, advanced beginners to late intermediate. Even advanced learners might find them useful, I suppose. I finished the Reading Greek series and started in on these books. At first, I used a lot of the vocabulary and grammar notes, but as I went I found myself relying on them less and less.
--You can start anywhere. I'm rating the Crito because it's freshest in my mind, but these are all good. One is as good as another, in terms of helping your Greek, so you can pick on the basis of your interest.

Overall, if you're looking for a Greek text for intermediate readers, then Steadman's books are the way to go.

This book is amazing
By jimbob
Okay, so for all you peeps that do Ancient Greek out there (and I'm guessing you do, if you're reading this), you're going to love this book. Just put down your Homeric epic, turn Troy off the TV and buy this book. Do it. It's actually amazing.

I've been studying Greek for about three years and this book has enabled me to read an original text for the first time. Its grammar notes are meticulous and there's more than enough vocab to keep you from flipping through that dusty, 19th century lexicon every ten seconds (these notes are all on the same page as the text, mind you). It's like Plato and the Steadman went and had the beautiful little baby that is this book.

I've also got Homer's Odyssey 6-8 by Steadman and Oh My Zeus just buy it. It's easily the best series on Ancient Greek around... tough considering all of its... uh... competition. As my mother would say, it's cheap as chips, and if you're into as weird a hobby as translating ancient texts about a stubborn old codger who'd rather die than admit he's wrong, then this is right up your alley.

This book is a gem.
By Jep
Geoffrey Steadman's recommended approach to reading Greek works. His layout is the real winner: vocab and concise grammar notes there ON THE SAME PAGE AS THE TEXT. As you progress, you find yourself referring to the notes less and less and just...reading!

Lysias 1 was the first text I read in its entirety in Greek, thanks to Geoffrey Steadman. I simply buzzed when I finished it. A bigger buzz when I finished this book, because there's Crito as well. Two whole texts. In Greek. How many people study Greek for years and never actually read a complete work?

I have just ordered Plato's Symposium (sorry Amazon not from you) - not because we are doing that in class - but because I want to read it in Greek, and with this sort of format, I know I can. At these prices, I know I can't afford NOT to.

This book is a gem.
