About the Author
David Friedman is a law professor and academic economist with a doctorate in physics and more than four decades of involvement in historical recreation. His nonfiction books have been reviewed in the Times Literary Supplement and the Wall Street Journal, discussed in an episode of Booknotes and used as university textbooks. He is, with his wife, the author of a book on medieval and renaissance cooking and another covering a wide range of topics in historical recreation. Salamander is his second novel. Magic, romance, conspiracy, intrigue,

I have read Friedman first fantasy novel, Harald from Baen Books. An epic fantasy but with little or no magic. So when he told me he had another story full of magic I was not sure how it would go. I was really surprise. For an expert on economics he writes a very good fantasy. His magic system is well thought out and explain. His characters are well rounded and grow through the story.

If you like magic and fantasy, with real story based on the same this book will pleased you.

I hope you buy it read it and praise it to the sky. If he makes money from this then he is more likely to write another.

Introducing this world through questions and answers in dialogues between Ellen the magical prodigy and her peers, Friedman constructs one of the most original and coherent systems of magic that I have ever read about. I'm impressed by the attention and thought he put into creating something that is like an alternate form of physics in a magical universe with different laws of nature.

The characters are enjoyable and I wanted to know what would happen next, but I'd guess at least 50% of this book is dialogue. Friedman likes to describe characters reasoning out actions- everyone has a tendency to state their well-considered, logical thoughts and then await their opponent's perfectly logical responses. The lack of emotional, rash words or actions is unreal, but I still found the arguments amusing and sharp.

The book starts off strong. Ellen's responses to various threats are well calculated and I was excited to see what would happen next. The 2nd half of the book seemed off balance in terms of the action- quite a lot happens in terms of large groups of people maneuvering and plotting but is not described in detail. I get the feeling that as a fantasy writer Friedman is more about ideas than about the craft.

Although the book could have been better executed, the ideas are creative, original, and entertaining. I think the book positions itself well as the first among many others in a series.

Strange and wondrous

Some novels, even good novels, can be read with your mind coasting in neutral. This is not one of them. But the reader who puts in some effort will find rich rewards here: magic, romance, intrigue, murderous politics, ...

One of the marks of really good fantasy is that the magic makes some sort of sense. (All too often magic is just used as a plot device, the way many Star Trek episodes used technobabble.) In this book, the magic system is so good that Friedman can depict people doing research into magic, at some length, and make it entertaining! Very, very few fantasy writers ever manage that.

Be warned: Freidman adheres strongly to the old writer's maxim to "show, not tell", with the result that readers need to pay attention to understand what is happening. There is a scene where one character "stop[s] breathing" briefly because of a single word. Only when you think about how each character present would have thought do you realize what a great scene it is. Also, you need to keep track of which quotes continue across paragraph boundaries.

This book will take more effort to read than most books, but it will be worth it. Strongly recommended.

This is amazing. Best book I ever bought and I didn't ...

Purchased this book three or so years ago. Read the first couple pages then just. Ever picked it up again. A month ago I was board and grabbed it off my shelf and started reading.. I had to read and re read pages. It is that interesting. I didn't care how long it took me to read it. For some reason I wanted to understand it. At this moment out of all the books I own this book is probably grabbed me more the anything. I am now trying to read book two but I think I'm going to retread this book a couple more times. This is amazing. Best book I ever bought and I didn't even know it. For the price you will get something priceless. A new understanding. Get a used copy. If you really like it as I do buy the hard copy after that. Buy it! now!

Food for Thought

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. So much so, I ordered the rest of the series and am now halfway through "The Stairway to Heaven."
About the only flaw I found in "The 12th Planet," was Sitchin's abrupt beginning and dense prose. Reading it was a bit like listening to someone speak heavily accented English.
I'm not saying I agree 100% with what he says. I did, however, find it fascinating and the length and breadth of his research astounding.
My suggestion, dear reader, is to do as I did. Buy this book, read it and if you find it and the theories in it intriguing, buy and read the rest.
Ignore all the hoopla for and against you may read here. Read the book and make up your own mind. If nothing else, Sitchin will give you lots to think about for a long time to come.
Oh... and to answer one of the other "reviewers" questions about Niburu breaking up like a comet. Why would it? It's in orbit (according to Sitchin) like all the other planets and since when do comets "break up" anyway? The only time they do is if they run into something like Jupiter.
And Sitchin addresses the idea (far too briefly) of how life could possibly originate on a planet that spends most of its time so far away from the sun. Heat, not light, is what is necessary (he says) for the formation of life. He theorizes that Niburu generates its own heat. {shrug} As good a theory as any, I guess.

Alternative History at it's Best !!!

Very radical alternative history at it's best. Only for the open minded. After reading this book, I realized how much it complemented many of Velikovsky's books,"World's in Collison", "Earth in Upheaval", and "Velikovsky Reconsidered". I highly recommend these to the reader to supplement Sitchin's books. There is a lot of commonality, but Velikovsky approaches his theories as more of a scientist, than from a religious point of view.
Sitchin provides a very detailed approach to deciphering ancient Sumerian history, biblical references, to the history of Earth, Man, and Gods. His theories explain an alternate history to traditional teachings. However, one thing he doesn't actually explain is, "Who created the Nefilim?". I am about to read,"The End of Days", I hope he explains this in that book.
I have used the exterrestrial concept of cloning and infiltrating the Earth in one of my stories (Aliens?) in my book, "The Nightmare Trilogy", available on amazon. However, I use a different concept of the aliens, perhaps, they were from here originally.

Handy checklist of leadership skills

Leadership requires crafting an agenda, working in a deeply political world and working closely with other people. Schools do not teach this. Business school fails dismally to teach this, and most corporate training swings wildly between technical training (accounting and systems) and tree hugging, raft building and team building on the other side, according to Jo Owen in this book.

The book aims to provide a framework for observing and learning from leadership experiences, by briefly describing a large number of different leadership skills. The skills are grouped into mindset skills, career skills, people skills, moment of truth skills, daily skills, organization skills, and values and behaviours.

While reading the book it seemed to me as if the author had overlooked a number of important leadership skills, but after making my own list and re-reading the book I am satisfied that the book does cover almost every skill I could think of, although not in the terms I would have used. The author’s forthright and sometimes Machiavellian advice includes:

• “The received wisdom about (the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) is that there is no ‘bad’ category. This is a fiction used by facilitators who want an easy time with the groups they lead.”
• “Managers use numbers the way drunks use lamp posts: for support, not illumination.”
• “(To motivate people) try to figure out how to appeal to fear, greed and idleness.”
• “An effective leader needs to be unreasonable, selectively. In setting expectations the leader learns to be selectively deaf: you will not hear all the excuses about rising input costs, increasing competition and demanding customers.”

I found the book entertaining to read, but I am still uncertain how valuable it is within the context of leadership development. It provides a useful checklist of skills, but the few pages devoted to each skill are insufficient to give a full understanding. As the author says, leaders learn from experience, not from courses. Perhaps the book helps you to recognise a mistake once you have made it.

About the Author

Vladimir V. Ghukasyan is a research assistant professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Physiology and a director of the Confocal and Multiphoton Imaging Facility of the Neuroscience Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He earned a PhD in biology from the Institute of Biotechnology, Yerevan, Armenia, and completed postdoctoral training at the Institute of Biophotonics, Taipei, Taiwan.

Ahmed A. Heikal is a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Swenson College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota Duluth. His research interests in molecular and cellular biophysics were inspired by his work with Watt W. Webb as a postdoctoral associate at Cornell University. Dr. Heikal earned a PhD in applied physics from the California Institute of Technology under the supervision of Nobel Laureate Ahmed H. Zewail.

About the Author
Cathie Ruggie Saunders has an MFA in Graphics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and a BA from Northwestern University. She is the Proprietor of The Hosanna Press, which has been in operation since 1973. Teaching at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago since 1984, she has overseen the growth of its Letterpress Shop from a single press and 20 cases of type, to a studio with 15�� tons of equipment and approximately 500 letterpress "graduates".

Martha Chiplis has an MFA in Graphics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She first printed on a Vandercook in 1984, and bought her own press in 1989. She worked for Sherwin Beach Press as a letterpress printer and designer for 16 years, and began teaching at the School of the Art Institute in 2008. She lives in a bungalow outside of Chicago.

Useful and inspiring!

I am a letterpress enthusiast and enjoyed this book cover to cover. It considers history and equipment and presents color photographs on almost every page of letterpress art from many artists as well as "how to" photographs. It thoughtfully considers how to plan and design letterpress art as well as what it takes to execute a project. It is obvious that the authors are experienced teachers and love their medium.

Summaries go over the main points and the text covers the concepts and events well. The illustrations are modern and informative as well.
I've read many books on the subject in college and during my career in media and this is the most pleasurable to consume.
