About the Author
ROBERT BEVERLY HALE was the Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a world-renowned teacher at New York Student’s Art League for 40 years, and Adjunct Professor of Drawing and Lecturer on Anatomy at Columbia University. He also co-authored Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters.

Good idea but not well executed

I am undecided about this book. Upon second look, I see some value but there is some 'buts':
It describes old masters paintings how they arrived with the shapes using geometrical shapes - such as column, egg, cylinder, block - using shade etc etc. Problem is: while the painting of chosen master takes the whole page (good thing)- explanations of where to look at on it are a tiny copies of the paining with capital letter on it to point out where to look. For example there is a letter B and note that that part of the body is egg shaped. All good but I do not see the egg shape ? would be nice if it was drawn on the tiny copy of the paining to be sure which way the egg is shaped and where exactly is it. Some letters cannot be found because they blend with the tiny drawing, they are small and fuzzy. The concept of the book is good, examining paintings of old masters and noting how they did it, but execution of this book is poor.
(My book was packed very sloppy and arrived with bend corner which I find very annoying. My drawing books are my little treasures. I was very surprised that Amazon would be so sloppy - it came from them)

Insightful and inspirational

[[VIDEOID:38659251]]Drawing Lessons From the Great Masters is an art book that teaches by looking at the art fundamentals used by great art masters themselves -- Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Rodin, Goya, Rembrandt, among others.
There are 100 master drawings analysed by Robert Beverly Hale on the fundamentals such as line, light and planes, mass, position and thrust, and anatomy. These are all figure drawings. Each illustration is printed full on one page with a certain section selected for analyzing on the next. The commentary is simple and concise, providing great insight to what these artists were thinking. Many of these pieces are really sketches but when you realised the thought put behind every stroke and what the artist was trying to show, you'll instantly be enlightened.
At the end of this book, even if you can't draw yet, you'll be able to identify the difference between a good and bad drawing. And when you draw, you'll remember the principles.
This is a really useful and inspirational reference book, great for beginner to advanced artists.
Robert Beverly Hale has also authored Anatomy Lessons From The Great Masters, which uses the same teaching style here but focusing on anatomy drawings.

Love this book

Well-written and well-illustrated, a fun book to read and use. Great information for the would-be artist, but also a great education for anyone interested in learning more about how to appreciate good drawing. This book has added a lot to my capacity to look at and understand art and I am grateful to have encountered it.
