Review

" . . . explores the beauty, essence, and enduring impact of Japanese design. . . Printed on craft paper and bound in the traditional Japanese style with a stitched spine and folded pages, the book itself is an art masterpiece." – Chopsticks Magazine

"For those unfamiliar with the Japanese term ’wa’, it can be loosely translated to mean ’harmony.’ The concept can be seen in many ways in Japanese culture; in this book it’s defined through 250 objects – from a 16th century bamboo case to a 1950s Isamu Noguchi table to a modern–day silk robe by Kenzo. What you can be sure of: everything chosen for the book is beautifully designed – right down to the utilitarian Kikkoman soy sauce bottle." – The New York Post

"Menegazzo and Piotti distill centuries of the wabi–wabi way of life in this elegantly curated photograph album of everyday items. . . While minimalism might not be everyone’s cup of green tea, those with the desire to pare down will surely find inspiration." – Publishers Weekly

"Exquisite. . . as an object itself, as well as a fantastic book that will further the knowledge and understanding of the sublime beauty of Japanese design." – Wendy Goodman, New York magazine

" . . . a beautiful compendium. . . What a shogun started in the 15th century still has currency today." – The New York Times

"An intellectually honest and provocative introduction to the culture of Japanese design practices." – Identity magazine

This beautiful book is designed in the Japanese manner with stiching ...
By nancy worth davis
This beautiful book is designed in the Japanese manner with stiching on the spine and double pages inside. The photographs of well balanced, well designed objects cover a period from ancient Japan to the present. The photos of ceramic pieces were especially beautiful. The lighting makes the ceramic surfaces feel tactile. Although the clay objects are my favorite, this book shows categories of Japanese design arranged by material touching on metal, paper, clay. wood and more. I've put "Wa" on my coffee table for the time being. I will protect it on a shelf after I finish picking it up daily to marvel.

Beautifully Presented Japanese Design Book
By W. Stotler
A beautifully bound book (honestly--it's beautiful) with great content on Japanese Design. My only complaint is that the beauty of the book seemingly competes with its contents about Japanese culture and design!

Woes of Ikenga, by Ndubuisi George

“It’s a new African fictional consomm, sweet like new wine as it were; but full of substance like an old one; having been brewed from an aged palm on an African fertile soil, yet by a sagacious tapper-son in diaspora. A coherent and competent literature for scholars of African cosmology, culture, philosophy, history and traditional religion (ATR) to mention but a few. This text-visual thriller is at one time calm and intense, and at another pathetic, yet didactic to the world in general. A literary masterpiece and a must read for any who would like to emigrate!” Fr. Ositadimma Amakeze (Author of the Lost Carver, Teeth of a Snail) “There is progressive awareness widespread among the Igbos at home and in diaspora concerning the ‘Greener Pasture’ illusion. Woes of Ikenga presents a window-view to what life in Europe could be like; and at the same time a doorway to liberation for the victims of an “Idealised Treasure Island.” John Paul Afuecheta The author tells a thought-provoking story of the struggle for survival and the illusive search for “greener pastures’ in a land said to be ‘flowing with milk and honey.” Woes of Ikenga is the story of a young man’s quest for success in a foreign land. Unfortunately he proves too indoctrinated in the omenani of his people to fit in and “behave as Romans when in Rome.” Amarachukwu Chimeka (SFEP Associate) “This is simply fantastic, narrative, engaging and superlatively tantalizing. In this mind blowing and thrilling stories of war and its challenging circumstances in Africa and the erroneous mindset of certitude of greener pasture; once traveled out to the white man’s land, by some Africans, the author has masterfully and courageously stepped towards the shoes of the likes of the Grand Commanders of African literature, Chinualumogu Achebe, Cyprain Ekwensi, Mariama Ba etc. Surely he is a few miles closer to them and will definitely find his voice. The novel is worth anybody’s time”. ___OGUEGBU, OSTENDE UDOKA. Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State, Nigeria.

"Woes of Ikenga" is simply the story of our time. A tale someone has to tell!

Full of wise and useful information for the youth
By Oluchukwu Afuecheta
Ndubisi George has a unique way of presenting reality through fictional writings. Like the great African novelist, Chinau Achebe, Ndubisi demonstrates a great skill in fictional writing that captivates the attention of the reader from the first to the last page. I enjoyed reading "Woes of Ikenga," because it is full of wise and useful information for the youth and for anyone that loves wisdom.

Cracking India: A Novel, by Bapsi Sidhwa

The 1947 Partition of India is the backdrop for this powerful novel, narrated by a precocious child who describes the brutal transition with chilling veracity. Young Lenny Sethi is kept out of school because she suffers from polio. She spends her days with Ayah, her beautiful nanny, visiting with the large group of admirers that Ayah draws. It is in the company of these working class characters that Lenny learns about religious differences, religious intolerance, and the blossoming genocidal strife on the eve of Partition. As she matures, Lenny begins to identify the differences between the Hindus, Moslems, and Sikhs engaging in political arguments all around her. Lenny enjoys a happy, privileged life in Lahore, but the kidnapping of her beloved Ayah signals a dramatic change. Soon Lenny’s world erupts in religious, ethnic, and racial violence. By turns hilarious and heartbreaking, the domestic drama serves as a microcosm for a profound political upheaval.

From Publishers Weekly
The narrator of Sidwha's ( The Bride ) timely novel about the violent 1947 partition of India is the extremely observant Lenny Sethi, whose family belongs to the Parsee community in Lahore. As a child, a polio victim and a member of a minority, she is the perfect witness (though somewhat precocious) to the historic upheaval. Sidwha tempers Lenny's hyper-awareness, however, by capturing the whole range of her fears and joys as her innocence becomes another casualty of the violence among Moslems, Sikhs and Hindus. At one point Lenny declares: "Lying doesn't become me. I can't get away with the littlest thing." Persuasive, this statement reinforces earlier comments she lets slip about herself which display this artless candor: "the manipulative power of my limp"; "I place a hypocritical arm protectively round her shoulders." Lenny's honesty is compelling, and the reader, like many in the story, cannot help but trust her. She is alternately thrilled and frightened by the events she dutifully records, and so, in the end, is the reader.
Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Presented in the first person by a sparsely educated Parsee girl in Lahore named Lenny, who grows from four to eight as she narrates, this novel is incongruously overloaded with erudite diction. Thus, unlike Huck Finn's tale, this child's story becomes unbelievable. Despite the title, it focuses on the everyday lives of Lenny, her family, and their associates, often interesting but frequently trivial. Throughout the book, Lenny includes verbatim transcriptions of extended conversations/situations about racial relations, sex, politics, religion, and selected aspects of the 1947 Partition. Sadly, the promise of the novel (semi-autobiographical?) is inadequately fulfilled and seems to falter from its conception. (Needed: a glossary of Indian words.)-- Glenn O. Carey, Eastern Kentucky Univ., Richmond
Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
Pakistani Sidhwa's third novel (The Bride, 1983; The Crown Eaters, 1982)--written from the point of view of a young girl who's surrounded by the personal and political violence that accompanied the partitioning of India in 1947--manages to do justice to the complexity of racial, ethnic, and religious violence in the era and to evoke the passage from an affluent childhood to the ambiguities of experience. ``India is going to be broken....And what happens if they break it where our house is?'' asks narrator Lenny, the daughter (who turns eight in 1947) of an affluent Parsi family in Lahore. And in fact her household does break apart when her young nanny, or Ayah, is kidnapped. Before that event takes center stage, the novel glorifies in the ``beautifully endowed'' world, which, as evoked by Sidhwa's luminous present-tense prose, is laminated with the magic of childish wonder: moving between her own house and that of her dynamic Godmother (``It is her nature to know things''), who lives ``with her docile old husband and slavesister,'' Lenny dramatizes the textures of multicultural Indian life, with its summer trips to the Himalayan foothills, dinner parties, visits from the ice-candy man, and, increasingly, hints of ``Hindu-Muslim trouble.'' While Lenny ``learns to tell tales'' by ``offering lengthier and lengthier chatter'' to fill dinner-time silences, she also becomes ``aware of religious differences.'' Sikhs start keeping to themselves, whereas before ``everybody is themselves.'' Violence escalates, India is divided, fires appear ``all over Lahore,'' and Ayah is kidnapped. She's finally found in the red-light district, then rescued through Godmother's influence, but it's clear that- -along with India and Lenny--she will never be the same. Richly layered, both realistic and magically evocative as well as topical: a novel that brings to triumphant life an India that ``has less to do with fate than with the will of men.'' -- Copyright 1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. The Partitiion of India
By Joyce Merletti
The story is told through the eyes of Lenny, a young Indian girl whose beautiful Hindu nanny has included her in her friendship with a number of young men of various religions and walks of life. Despite the differences, they are united by their love for her. As their beloved nation drifts toward a complete rupture, violence begins in the streets; the child sees some of the young men changing religions to protect their families, or leaving the city for a safer place. She begins to understand the religious divisions that are ripping the fabric of India. She witnesses scenes of slaughter; her nanny is betrayed and kidnapped, bringing her to a shameful life.
No childhood can continue amid this terror, and the reader feels such sympathy for little, crippled Lenny and her young friends. But heart-wrenching as the story is, it is only one story of that time, and Sidhwa tells it very well. She sheds light on this dark period, but in doing so, makes the reader want to know more about that time, and what led to it.

Loss of innocence and national chaos
By Luan Gaines
Wrenched from the security of the familiar, a young girl gleans intimate knowledge of the nature of betrayal. As a cosseted child, Lenny's short life is defined by the affection of family, friends and her beloved Ayah. As most children who have the blessing of regularity in their lives and know the indulgence of boredom, Lenny is on an intimate terms with mundane household affairs and neighborhood gossip, her extended family ever available for entertainment and amusing peccadilloes. The family's simple life changes forever with the Partition of India in 1947 and the creation of Pakistan for Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs remaining in the state of India. As citizens of the newly formed Pakistan, this family's everyday reality begins to shift with the changing times, threatening to destroy a child's security and trust forever.
In Lahore, a city that has welcomed differences and encouraged variety, Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus have mixed without incident. After the Partition, the dangers of alliance permanently stamp the mark of change and entire families begin to disappear overnight. In agonizing stages, Sidwha relates this tragic account through Lenny's eyes. And it is that vision, with glimpses of violence flashing around the periphery, that ultimately alerts Lenny to the shape of the future. The juxtaposition of family life and national chaos outlines an insider's interpretation of daily routine and a whole country spinning out of control. Peopled with eccentric characters and quirky personalities, one of the most romantic and beloved is Lenny's beautiful and desirable Ayah. Ultimately, the abrupt disappearance of that Ayah, who has been kidnapped by nefarious characters, is central to the theme of this carefully wrought tale. All sense of harmony and continuity is abruptly shattered by the miasma of violence that seeps under closed doors at night like a poisonous invisible fog. This book is a stunning reminder of the nature of impermanence, "collateral damage" in the form of a loving Ayah, whose lovely spirit is virtually destroyed along with Lenny's innocence.

The animal inside us all
By A Customer
I was shocked to read a couple of previous reviews claiming "Cracking India" portrays certain groups as monstrous while favoring others. Whoever has made these statements has obviously skipped over huge chunks of Bapsi Sidhwa's book, for Sidhwa goes out of her way to present a balanced point of view of Partition. This book is about the animal inside all people -- the demon that can emerge in the name of religion within everyone, whether Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, or whatever. This book is not about an "us" and the "other" -- or conversely, it deals very much with the "us" and the "other," and in doing so, is not. While i could very easily disprove the claims of bias made by a couple of previous reviews, by quoting several powerful incidents from the book i would only be doing future readers a disfavor -- i do not want to rob anyone of exactly the elements of universal horror and suspense that make the book the masterpiece it is. I recommend this book highly to anyone -- i know it left me tear-streaked and stunned.

Kip Paxton may be the perfect man. He's a sexy, tattooed, foul-mouthed, drummer god for Broken Access, and if that wasn't enough he snagged the Guitar Goddess herself. Where one door opens in life, another closes, and sometimes other doors burst wide f@$king open.

Finding out he was lied to his entire life, and that all his noble deeds were done in vain sends him spiraling out-of-control. It sucks the life right back out of him, but luckily he has an entire crew of family to put him back together, and his family may have just gotten a little bigger.

If you've not read the first three installments of the Guitar Face Series, it is highly recommended. This is not a stand alone novel.

Love this series!
By Beckie
Guitar Face is one of my all time favorite rocker books! I love that there is a female lead in this series! Henley Hendrix is one bad ass rocker chick! She's made mistakes, owned them, learned from them and grew from them.

I was so happy that Hen and Kip were together...finally! Long time coming. I'm reading the book and thought that this was a solid couple. They love each other, with a strong foundation and relationship. what could go wrong? Well..a lot actually. Everyone around Hen is falling apart.

What happens when the people who claim to love you and have your back, don't even realize your missing in a club after 2 hours? Don't even wonder where you are? Even when they realize something is wrong, they do nothing about it. That's the beginning of the end.

Kips childhood was fu**ed! No doubt about it. He was handed a raw deal. With an Abusive father and an alcoholic mother he's pretty messed up. He's a jokester and a prankster. I love him! Some of the things he says and the situations he gets into is truly hilarious!

Let me say that some of the funniest scenes I have ever read were in this book! The Sandy/pregnancy/nipple pumping scenes were the most comical I have ever read! I was glad I was alone. I was laughing so hard!

Where did all go wrong? Kip should of never left to clear his head like he did. It was a pu**y thing to do! When the going gets tough, he runs away! Well that's just asinine and immature.

After what happened while he was away, I can't see a happy ending for the couple. How can one forgive such horrible transgression! What a d**k! Beat his a** Henley! Move on and upward! If someone truly loves you, they don't cheat, no matter how drunk they are! That's just the excuse they use!

I can't wait for the next book! Read all of the books in this series! They wont disappoint!

Favorite Out of The Series So Far
By Leona (Literary Treasure Chest)
I don’t know if it was the brattiness of Sasha Marshall’s fans or not that prompted her to post chapters either daily or weekly on Wattpad weeks before River of Deceit’s release but I am grateful. Being able to read this book before it’s publication helped me to know that there were still books that aren’t trying to fit in with the other popular books, but is just trying to tell a story about characters that touch the author’s heart (at the time of River of Deceit’s reading I had been reading some crappy books and I really needed a reboot).

Like many of Sasha Marshall’s fans who read the end of Walking Back to Georgia I was practically ripping my hair out and contemplating stalking strategies to get River of Deceit in my hands as soon as possible to see what happens next between Kip and Henley (Kipley as we fans call them). While I don’t like cliffhangers unless the next book is sitting on my self, both electronically or physically, this author’s work is the exception. She’s the queen of cliffhangers, she always has me coming back.

Anyway, enough fan-girling. The beginning of River of Deceit starts off exactly where Walking Back to Georgia ended, with Henley and Kip in the bathroom about to finally put us all out of our misery and BOW CHICKA WOW WOW. Even though I was anxious to see where the next step in their relationship would go, I couldn’t have imagined all the ups and pit-lows they would have to go through, and even still things (as always) take a turn for the worst as almost all good things in life do.

The realistic situations and emotions that this author writes about blows my mind every time I turn the page. There are a few author’s I have read that have the ability to write scenes and characters that have me crying laughing, crying tears of gut-wrenching pain, and then make me feel at the end as if I’ve climbed the mountain with each character as they go through their obstacles all in the same book.

This may seem strange to some but I seriously felt that River of Deceit had the feelings of the last book in the Guitar Face series, for some reason. My thought was that since Henley is finally with the man she’s supposed to be with, Henley might now be getting her happily ever after. Pause…I must’ve forgotten whose book I was reading because Sasha Marshall loves twisting my world of tranquility into so many tangled and barbed webs that I can’t seem to keep my hands from touching them and try to untangle them, loving the pain at the same time, maybe I’m as twisted as she is.

I feel like I’ve rambled enough, the bottom line is that while I loved the other books in this series I think that River of Deceit might be the best out of the series so far. I truly feel like Henley has risen from the ashes and has gotten back to her roots, accumulating all the good and determination to be the best and inputting it into being the person she is at the end of River of Deceit. She’s a new creation who’s not willing to be the punching bag that her bandmates and cousin bandmates sometime need to bolster themselves up. She’s the new Henley that I am absolutely loving, and for a second I was almost not on team Kipley because of the pain Kip brought her, but everyone is redeemable if they have a mind to be, and I hope Kip delivers his apologies the way they need to be in order to get Henley back.

Kip Paxton...Yes Please
By Doris
Kip Paxton...yes please. How could you resist a hot tatted rocker with humor that is off the charts? If he doesn't leave you busting a gut with laughter he has you fangirling all over his ass playing drums for his band. What else could you ask for? Oh, maybe that he can leave you very satisfied in the bedroom as well because he also has the sexual ability to take you to places that can only happen in “normal” peoples’ minds; that is unless you are linked to a rock star who knows how to treat a woman, put a smile on her face, and be loyal as a St. Bernard!

This is Kip’s story and I knew going in it would have to be hilarious because Kip is the kind of guy I would love to hang around with because the antics of Kip is unparalleled....the sh*t he can’t think of! Add that to the rest of the group of friends and bandmates these guys are ridiculous. Their little escapade in the drug store is hilarious.

It wasn’t always fun and games for Kip because he grew up being abused by his father with his mother looking on. His only salvation came from the Hendrix family when they took Kip in and made him one of their family. Kip and Henley have been best friend since childhood. They had the kind of friendship that would last a lifetime. It was Kip who was there for Henley when she and Caleb had their car accident that took Caleb from them and it was Kip who was there as Jagger was putting Henley through hell during their volatile relationship that threw Henley into drug abuse that nearly killed her. It was after Henley was able to get herself together that she realized that this friend who had always been there for her could also be her soul mate. It was easy at first to look past something that was right in her face the whole time…the love that she and Kip had for each other. Would this relationship end up wrecking their friendship and tearing their two bands apart? It would seem impossible since both bands were at the top of their game and the friendship that this group all had since childhood seemed as tight as any could be. Who knew that along with all of the fame and fortune Kip’s past would come back full force to rear its ugly head and affect the happiness he had finally found with Henley, his friends, and his music.

Ms. Marshall’s writing style is like none other because she can take you to the highest high and then take you to the lowest low. I have done full out belly laughs because the humor that Ms. Marshall writes with is incomparable but don’t keep that Kleenex box too far away because she also writes with such sadness and despair that saying I have done the ugly cry doesn’t even come close to describing what I have done in parts of this book.

Yes, there are other rock romance books that I have read and given 5 stars to because they are really, really good but the Guitar Face series stands out above them all. I have never felt more invested in a group of people and I hope you give yourself a chance to follow this group to know what the laugh out loud moments are all about along with the heart wrenching feelings you will get with everything that happens to them as well.

This book was provided to me by the author for an honest review.

Introduction

Darlings, darlings, darlings, have no fear, Mama Gena is here! Here to take you high and make you fly and have your way with the men in this world. My darlings, I want you to feel the same kind of navigational certainty with your men as you do when you slip behind the steering wheel of your car or assemble the ingredients for your favorite recipe or organize a conference at work. I want you to know your way, with confidence, over that terrain called "men." I want you to become the navigatrix you were born to be. I want you to feel every drop of exquisite power and beauty and gloriousness that you, as women, were designed to feel in relationships with men.

I am so over your sacrificing yourselves and diminishing yourselves and belittling yourselves. I am done, done, done, I tell you, with tales of women doing things to make other people happy, at the expense of themselves. And I want you to be done, too. Or at least, if not done, then open to the idea that things can get a whole lot better than they are. And how do they get better, Mama? They get better, so better, fantastically, unbelievably better, when we, as women, take control of the steering wheel and begin to own and operate our men, and own and operate ourselves.

I want you all to have the unprecedented experience of true partnership with the men in your lives. You cannot be partners with someone you are subservient to. You can't be partners with someone you are obligated to. Partnership is a game of equals, each playing their different part. A knife and a fork are equals, but different. Men and women are equals, but different. When we know our part and play it to the maximum effect, and guys know and play their part to the maximum effect, it is a fantastic combination. A union of differences! Which translates to the thing we want the most -- a friendship in which intimacy and closeness and fun grow over a lifetime. I want you each to relish your womanhood and relish the deliciousness of your relationships with men. Mama wants you to have a man who serves you, worships you, and adores you. A sex life that is constantly evolving, expanding, and giving you extended, massive pleasure. A deep, lovely friendship with a guy who is on your side and wants you to have everything you desire. A partner. A best friend you have sex with. Why would any sane woman want anything less? Ultimately, I want you to be capable of creating a partnership with another human being that reflects you, enhances you, and brings you and your partner the kind of intimacy and ecstasy that you long for, and probably don't see many examples of in the world. My life's work has been about that journey.

Let us reinvent the path to succulent, joyous relationships. Don't you want to get it so good that all of your girlfriends want what you have? Mama is here to pose and answer the question "What is it, exactly, that we are supposed to do with men?" She will explain why the time has finally come for women to fulfill their destiny: owning and operating men. It is a tough job, oh Sister Goddesses, but someone's gotta do it.

By the time you finish reading this book, you'll be able to grab the steering wheel and own and operate your men. All of your men. Your husbands, fathers, boyfriends, dry cleaners, brothers, bosses, employees, waiters, gardeners, and hairdressers. Go get 'em, gals, they are there purely for your pleasure.

At this point, I have a warning and a request: This book is by a woman, for women only. This book simply is not for men. I teach a whole wonderful course for men called "Mama Gena Gives It Up to Men." And do I ever. But this is not that. This is Mama, speaking to her sisters, and if you are a guy, you may feel offended or diminished or slighted. And that is not my goal. I adore men. I love the way they feel, the way they smell, the way they melt me with love and make me weak in the knees. I love to surrender to their touch and feel them respond to mine. I am grateful for their loyalty, their adoration, and their steadfast devotion. But this is not "giving it up to men" time. This is "giving it up to my Sister Goddesses" time.

A Sister Goddess is a woman who has taken one of my courses or read one of my books. "Sister," because we as women are all sisters, and "Goddess" because every woman has a spark of the divine in her. And when you treat a woman as a sister and as a goddess, you bring out the best in her. And bringing out the best in a woman is a very brilliant thing to do. The goal of this book is exactly that -- to bring out the divine in all of you. I have fantastic desires and dreams about women creating lives with their men that include an abundance of sensuality, fun, and intimate joy with each other. And my method is to exclude you, guys, and lay some truth on my Sisters.

Indulge Mama, would you? If you are a man, shut this book instantly. Return it to the shelf you took it from. Leave me alone with the ladies. It's time for a woman-to-woman chat. I'll get to you next time. Remember, Mama loves you....

Now, my darling Sister Goddesses, you know that owning and operating men is something that has been going on for centuries, just as gravity had been going on for centuries before Newton drew it to our attention. Women have been in charge of men since the dawn of time. It is only now that we can articulate and gain control of that which has always existed. Before we knew there was gravity, some valuable piece of jewelry might have been carried off by the wind or floated away or vanished. Once we knew about gravity, we could take advantage of it, count on it, put our fears to rest. We know that missing jewels were either dropped, misplaced, stolen, or else exactly where we left them. We are in control because we understand how this unseen force affects our universe. The laws of owning and operating men work precisely the same way. Once we understand the laws, we are confident, we are in control, and we know what to do next. If he leaves you, it's not because you are a loser or because you are not worthy or that you will never hold on to a man. If he has left, it's because you were done with him, or he was poorly trained before you found him, or you are clearing the decks for something much better. There is method to the madness.

Now, Mama, you say that women have been in control of men since the dawn of time -- what do you mean by that exactly? I believe that Helen had Paris by the balls, that Cleopatra gave eternity to Marc Antony and Julius Caesar, that greatness, inspiration, life, passion, creativity, new directions, innovations all come directly from the impact, influence, and presence of women.

I grew up in a world, like you did, where natural law seemed rather different. My father worked, my mother was responsible for the food and housekeeping. Cover story was that he made all the decisions; he was the head of the household. But I noticed that the most significant decisions in our family life originated from her, not him. We moved from one house to another when she decided she wanted a bigger one. There were three children because she wanted three. We got used cars because she thought new ones were a waste of money. My brothers became doctors because she wanted them to. And the only person her desire had no impact on was me, the only other female. I actually used to get quite annoyed at my dad for being so vulnerable to her power. Men were presidents, doctors, lawyers, and heads of newspapers, TV stations, magazines. They were God, basically, and yet I noticed my dad could not get out of the house in the morning without my mom picking out his clothes for him. A widely respected physician required help matching his tie to his shirt and would wear black socks and shoes to the beach with his bathing suit unless we stopped him.

And you know, the point I am making is not about fashion. It's about power and responsibility. It's about exposing exactly how things are and playing with the cards we are dealt, rather than playing with some already extinct, outdated models that won't lead to happiness. If we keep mimicking our parents' relationships, we will never get to experience the outrageous joy that is available in a game of equals, a game of partners.

Think of owning and operating men as simply an alternative experiment, darlings. The current experiment is an abysmal failure. You know, the whole women-serving-men thing, the whole he's-superior-and-we're-inferior thing. They don't like it, we don't like it. It's a disaster, really. Look at the divorce rate -- 50 percent of all marriages end in divorce, and it's 100 percent in the state of California because so many people get married and then divorce and then remarry and divorce and then marry again and divorce. One person with three divorces could be responsible for a 300 percent divorce rate. In New York City, 60 percent of all households are single. Why is that? And yet, women all over the world are stuffing themselves into long white gowns and scurrying down the aisle as though it were a blue light special at Kmart. What's up with that? If someone told you about a fabulous mutual fund you could invest in, and said that it might or might not give you any interest and that there was a 50 percent chance you could lose your whole investment, you know for a fact that you would decline the offer. So why are women rushing toward marriage with the same purposeful abandon as kamikaze pilots in World War II?

Why are we failing so miserably? In the last century, and in those before, one of the great driving goals of life was simple survival: food and shelter. Man was the provider and the woman supported him. The male-dominated relationship paradigm was great for survival of the human species. We are a living testament to its effectiveness. In order to survive, there needed to be a man going out to hunt or fish or gather, and a woman to tend the home and birth the babies. For the last five thousand years or so, women have traded sex, housekeeping, and childcare for food and shelter from male providers. Even now, many women put their needs behind those of their husbands. Happiness has not been considered a priority.

In the twenty-first century, in this country, we are privileged. Most of us have our survival handled, and we are free to pursue happiness. Once you have survival handled, the purpose of life changes. In this country we are promised, "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." These days, the common goal for individuals and relationships is happiness. Each of us can handle the survival stuff on our own. What we want with each other is more happiness than we can create alone. We lack the skills needed to create great, fabulous, fun relationships that start well and get better and better over a lifetime. We were taught how to "do" relationships by people who created bonds for survival purposes. For our grandparents, happiness was not a goal; food, shelter, and reproduction were their priorities. We're working with an outdated blueprint: the relationship equivalent of trying to fly to the moon in a 747. Or doing microsurgery with a machete. You can't reach your goals unless you use the right instrument.

Mama will reveal an entirely new model for relationships: the Sister Goddess model, one that is in sync with the men and women of today. The Sister Goddess paradigm is what will take us to our new goals: pleasurable survival, or the creation of fun, intimacy, happiness, gratitude, celebration, and joy. True friendships between men and women are the new opportunity of this century. This book will be a blueprint for how to successfully create a relationship of true friendship and genuine intimacy. That thing that everyone wants but no one has a clue how to get. You know this world is hungry for some new ideas. And ain't it the truth that if you want to make a relationship happy, you gotta ask the woman what's missing, and if you want to make a woman happy, you gotta ask her how, and don't we just have a lot to say on the subject, once you get us started? All of it pearls, pure pearls.

I know you all grew up hearing the saying "If the mama ain't happy, no one's happy." I also know that if you are still married or still with your boyfriend (and if you are not totally numb), then you are with a man who, to at least some degree, knows you are the center of his universe and encourages you to have your way with him. I know that if you have dumped your guy, it is because he thought he was the center of his universe. There is nothing more boring than a man who believes he is operating himself. Case in point: Donald Trump. Women do not leave men who give them everything they want. We are greedy, not crazy. We leave men who are self-absorbed, who don't pay attention to us, who think that what they want is far more important than what we want.

Training a man is not a solo activity. It is far easier and far less dangerous with a good girlfriend by your side. That is why Mama is here. So, as I say every chance I get, "Have no fear, Mama Gena is here!" Mama's gonna train you to have your way with men. For their benefit as well as yours. Come on, gals, it's just an experiment.

This book is my heartfelt, ecstatic effort to open new doors for you, dear Sisters, and guide you toward getting everything you want, desire, and deserve from your relationships. I want you to believe that the potential exists for actual friendship, passion, and union between men and women. That is the kind of relationship I am privileged to have with my husband, Bruce.

But creating a great relationship is learned behavior. We live in a world where people understand how to make a living. We spend years at school studying how to do that, and most people who want to can get jobs and maintain them. Au contraire in the world of relationships. I have seen very successful people in marriages they hate. I have seen the quiet desperation of women who find themselves capable of creating fabulous careers for themselves and incapable of creating intimacy with a partner. I have seen men helplessly trying to make their wives or girlfriends happy. I have seen couples who split up not because they couldn't make a go of it, but because they didn't know how to make things get better. I have seen anger replace love. To tell you the truth, I have seen very little love. More like cold war. Or games of what he owes her or she owes him. What I do not see is a lot of fantastic, juicy fun and friendship.

I started out with that exact degree of ignorance and cluelessness. When I was eighteen years old, I met this guy, Guy, who I thought was going to be my future husband. I loved him instantly, and on first glance. It was winter, and we were walking with some friends in the snow at Dartmouth College. Guy threw himself into a snowbank, just for the fun of it. I thought to myself, I will marry this man and have his children. He was tall, handsome, sweet, and so different from me. He went to prep school, I went to public school. He threw himself birthday parties and was on the wrestling team. I was a theater major and my friends and I were all tortured.

From the beginning, I totally and completely went out and "got" this Guy. He was dating another woman, so I lurked until it was time to make my move. On his birthday, I took a bus to his town, went to the pizza shop, and sent him an olive pizza, because I remembered a story I had heard about him eating olive pizza with his best friend: they left the open box on the windowsill, and the next morning the leftover pizza was gone. They had a joke that the Olive Pizza God ate it. I signed the humorous poem I wrote him, the "Olive Pizza God," leaving just enough clues in the note to reveal my true identity. It was not until two days later that he called me to thank me, but when he did, he invited me out to Chinese food at Dartmouth. My plan had worked.

The thing about this was that I was operating totally on instinct. I had read stories my whole life about women who had been swept off their feet by men and had men pursuing them and worshiping them. So here I was, capturing Guy, and thinking the whole time that I was doing it wrong, that it was supposed to be some other way, that my being in charge and making the moves was not how the fairy tales went. Therefore, I reasoned, something had to be wrong with Guy or wrong with me. Or the whole setup was askew. My expectation was that a man would appear and sweep me away to a marvelous life of intimacy, fun, and delicious fabulousness. This is not how it happened for me. Basically, I spotted him, I picked him, then I clubbed him over the head and dragged him back to my cave, rather than the other way around. I thought there was something wrong with me and the way I constructed and created my relationship. This man was perfectly wonderful, but I thought it was all wrong because I had done all the decision making and the conjuring. We moved to New York because I moved to New York. We moved in together because I decided. I had been taught the Barbie/Disney version of the perfect love story. You know, the one where the prince comes and sweeps us away into our storybook forever-and-ever land. I knew that wasn't happening to me, so I thought I better cut out from this guy, Guy, and make room for the prince. I didn't want to miss my chance. I had no skills to create a great relationship, and of course I blamed him, and myself. I blamed him for being boring, for not being fun, and for not being able to fix it. And I blamed myself for not being able to make it with this perfectly great Guy.

And the interesting thing was, I looked around and thought to myself, I will just find a couple who is having a fabulous time and ask them how to do it. They will tell me. Only, I looked around and I could not find anyone who was doing great in the world of relationships. Most of my girlfriends thought I had it pretty good and wished they were dating Guy. Older couples seemed content with mediocrity or a life of minimal communication, minimal sex, and minimal fun. My conclusion was that the loneliness and the silence that happens between couples who stop communicating was worse than being alone. I went to therapy and that made me feel worse. But I thought it was good to feel worse. So I broke up with Guy, determined to use my therapy to research every last drop of my anguish from which I could rise like a phoenix and be whisked into an ecstatic relationship life.

What happened instead was that I was celibate for about eight years while I examined, in fantastic detail, my problems. (I have since made up for lost time.) I also found out that many of the experts in the psychology of relationships do not have a clue about happiness, especially happiness between a man and a woman. And I had a lust for happiness. I had lust for a man. I had lust for lust. So I appointed myself the Creatrix of Relationship Technologies, a company and research facility for the study and pursuit of pleasure.

And I appointed my fabulous friend and husband, Bruce, as my research assistant and partner. I suppose you noticed that I leapt rather swiftly from my breakup with Guy to my marriage and husband. All those juicy details of how I found him and married him will follow. This is just the introduction. I decided that if we wanted to get a handle on happiness, we had better study pleasure, not problems. And if we wanted to study intimacy, we should keep on having it, rather than looking at the reasons why we shouldn't. And if we wanted to have great sensual lives, we had to study sensuality. Bruce and I have now been married for thirteen years. We work together and have fun together and have a child together and have great sex together. And we have been experimenting with researching pleasure as a discipline for the creation of a great partnership between a man and a woman. So far, it is so good.

And these are the doors I want to open up for you, dear Sisters, as a viable alternative to compromise, mediocrity, loneliness, and hopelessness in the man/woman game. We are going to examine how you can get everything you want from a man and have him be exquisitely happy giving it to you. I want you to have the sex you want, the love you want, and the intimacy you want. And all it takes is practice. What I mean by practice is, you have to learn to drop the habits that you currently have which may not be serving you in favor of methods of operating that bring you closer to your goals. This takes effort.

When a prima ballerina shoots across the stage like a weightless wisp of gracefulness, we all clap and say, "My, what a natural!" But there is nothing natural about it. That diva worked her ass off to become so gorgeous and ethereal. You are going to have to work your ass off to create new pathways by which you can achieve the intimacy, fun, pleasure, and happiness you want with men. Training a man is about telling the truth to men, nicely. It's about handling your anger and not spewing it all over him because he has not read your mind. It's about exposing your desires. It's about asking for what you want and being friendly in your communications. It's about taking responsibility for your pleasure. It's about including him in your deepest dreams and desires. It's about using him for your pleasure and remembering he lives to serve you and make you happy. Training a man is about reminding yourself that you are now, and forever, the superior being, and your happiness is the goal of the relationship. Otherwise, the relationship will fail. You do not have to change in any way. You can be exactly and totally yourself, and still have your way. In fact, that is the only way to have your way.

This book will give you lessons and homework. You will do as much or as little as you want. Bear in mind that this is just an experiment, an experiment in happiness and pleasure between men and women. You will be trying something new, which can feel uncomfortable at first. On the other hand, it's not like the old methods of creating relationships are so successful. We have each had our share of loss in that world. My goal is to create a new outlook that will in turn offer you an opportunity to create the relationship life that you have always wanted. And for each of you, the ideal relationship will be different. Some of you will save a marriage, create a marriage, or break up your marriage. Some of you will find one special someone. Some of you will get a different piece of ass every night of the week. Some of you will do a little of this and a little of that. As long as you are enjoying the scenery, Mama's thrilled to have you along for the ride.

exquisitely simple perspective; juicy results
By Kate Chopin
I read this book in three days. Mama Gena offers a fresh, woman-centered approach to relationships and life, and it's an important shift with juicy results. The thing is, Mama Gena's approach is incredibly simple. And yet Cosmo and every other book in this genre I've ever read might have some good ideas, but don't get to the real crux of the relationship problem. And that's where Mama Gena swoops in, gives out homework, and acts like your own personal cheerleader to help you see life in a brighter way. I have to say, just by reading the book, I started to see the shift, and the response, I wanted and never got before. I know it sounds so cliche, and you can read reviews like this on every brand of self-help book, but just try this book or Womanly Arts. It's fun, it's completely doable, and worth it. Every woman has the potential to have the life she desires ... it's just knowing you can go after it. And that is the beauty of Mama Gena's approach to life.

I really appreciate Mama Gena and her message, and I cannot recommend this book enough.

Great Book If You're Open To Having Fun!
By dd
She's blunt. She's brazen. You could even say she's a bit raunchy - {gasp!} - but she's right on track. It is not your usual self-help book that's for sure. Basically, Mama Gena is saying "lighten up" (which some people on this site obviously have trouble with) and enjoy being you! Give yourself a break. It's a hysterical book, but gets down to the nitty gritty in that most women really don't enjoy being themselves and that when you do start to enjoy being you - others enjoy being near you! I received this book from a friend when I was feeling very down about myself and my life. I found it very helpful and have forwarded it on to several other women in my life who enjoyed it. I would really recommmend it to any women who are feeling generally down and out, a bit blue raddley, or really just want a good laugh and a quick pick-me-up.

Good Advice, Poor Approach
By TammyJo Eckhart
The heart of Mama Gena's advice is this: Know what you want AND Ask for what you want. This is something that women, and I'm one of them, seem to have a difficult time doing. It can work, not always, but often it can work especially if you are unwilling to tolerate anything else or to do it yourself. However advice is only good if it can be heard and accepted. The tone of this book is one of, its difficult to classify, but some type of "hip," urban, lingo between "sister goddesses". The level of familiarity made me uncomfortable, the number of vague vignettes were unhelpful, and the focus on feeling your sexuality also a bit vague. That is my biggest complaint: lots of general advice, little concrete suggestions and examples even though there are numerous "exercises" throughout the book. This isn't about "men" this is really about women and should be marketed as such.

Profound, Eloquent, and Extremely Accessible
By Bree Shinkle
It is seldom that most readers come across a spirituality book that varies from topics such as Astral Projection to environmentalism that is so well-thought-out and written while actually providing concrete answers. The book is a fascinating read and provides insight into a range of topics both spiritual and practical. Initially, I was most interested in the subject matter relating to astral projection and reincarnation, but quickly realized the great wisdom throughout the entire book revolving around the overarching theme of love, tolerance, and personal betterment. I'd like to think that I have improved myself as a person by doing the mental exercises to become a more mindful and tolerant individual. Even if your personal beliefs don't align with that of this book, it still is an essential piece of reading to understand the universe and life around us in a way that can be personally interpreted to make sense of one's ideology. Megan Elliot is a very promising young author and I look forward to reading her future books.

By Amazon Customer
Both my husband and I were curious about this book. It came recommended by a spiritual friend of ours as a great little book packed with huge ideas. I was skeptical as I rely on the Bible's teachings to verify or discount my own thoughts and feelings about spiritual things.

My guess is this book is written by someone who is more familiar with Buddhissm and general spiritual teachings than Christianity and so there is less Biblical language and this may lose some Christians when reading what is written here. I hope not though.

As a Christian, I sometimes have a hard time setting aside superstition and fear to look more closely at other spiritual teachings.

In this book though, I see the love of Jesus' teachings in Albert's words...and wonder sometimes too - if he isn't the Holy Spirit calling himself by another name...but this is the "lens" I look through...

Some things I love from this book: "When love becomes the number one goal in your life, the universe will respond to you...."

"What you need to do above all else is know yourself. Once you have done that, you must love yourself...once you know others, you must love them..."

In the chapter titled Astral Protection (Chapter 5), Albert states:

"...you have learned enough from cultural ideas and religious beliefs to get an idea of what (evil) is and how it is created...most of you misunderstand how to go about nullifying evil. You believe that it is something to be fought against...literally...this is precisely the wrong way to go about it...seek to understand why the negativity is there an try to heal it in a way that is safe for everyone."

Amen Albert.

And there here are so many more wonderful spiritual truths stated though out this book-which is packed with such a diverse expanse of information that is only touched upon. One such is: "Try to be at peace and take your life as it comes. Don't take direction from anything other than your own heart."

There are many parts of this book that perhaps reflect Ms. Elliott's specific interests - an understandable thing since she is the one doing the channeling, she would have asked "Albert" about many things she is specifically interested in. Albert tries to explain some very deep and profound universal truths in and among the various chapters that made all of it worth reading.

Sometimes, Albert's explanations of certain things just blew my mind (in a good way). Particularly in Chapter 9 - Exploring the Infinite

Here Albert launches into the territory the Bible hints at when it tells us that God's ways and his thoughts are far higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9). Isaiah states that God's "understanding no one can fathom" (Isaiah 40:28). Paul said, "Oh the depths of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments and his paths beyond tracing out!" (Romans 11:33). Job said , "Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know" (Job 42:3; see also Psalm 139:6).

Albert's words are: "God's story is complicated. God thinks, God wonders. God is in the dark too. There is nothing that God doesn't know, and yet It can never know Itself completely."

All in all, there was many things here that are beyond my spiritual path in understanding and many things here that are not in the scope of what interests me specifically, BUT. Many many things that made this a very worthwhile read and will remain in my mind to contemplate and pray about.

Most of all, I love that this Albert only just touched on so many things. I felt that I could just sit down and talk with him for the next several months and still end up wanting to know more.

Liberal Socialism: An Alternative Social Ideal Grounded in Rawls and Marx, by Ian Hunt

Should we be looking for alternatives to the western world’s status quo of neo-liberal capitalism? Should we be seeking a new form of freedom for a more just and better social world? Drawing on Rawls’s theory of justice and Marx’s critique of capitalism, this book answers those questions in a resounding affirmative. Some think that a just society for Rawls cannot promote a better social world unless it is acceptable to all but, this wrongly treats Rawls as a supporter of minimal government. Setting this aside, the book argues that the ideas of justice behind political and media pundit support of neo-liberal capitalism are faulty, and should be replaced with a Rawlsian idea of justice. Resistance to the idea that an acceptable theory of justice can say that capitalism is unjust is overcome by showing that capitalism, as Marx sees it, must be unjust on Rawls’s theory of justice because it breaches the difference principle and involves exploitation of employees. Reasons are then given for a new society that will be just under a modified Rawlsian idea of justice and will promote the Marxian good of free social cooperation on projects pursued independently of demands of nature. What a free life lived in this new society means is spelled out and shown to be acceptable. This book concludes by asking whether society can set out on a path to a better social world.

Review
Ian Hunt’s Liberal Socialism is both a powerful contribution to the critique of hegemonic modes of justification for neoliberal capitalism, and an important attempt to synthesise elements from Marx and Rawls into an alternative to this unjust social ideal. While I don’t share all of Hunt’s political conclusions, his book deserves to be taken seriously by all those concerned with challenging the injustices characteristic of the modern world.
