About the Author
Lexicographer Barbara Ann Kipfer holds a Ph.D. and an M.Phil in linguistics from England's University of Exeter, and is a pioneer in electronic lexical systems. She has designed and assembled lexicographic references and conducted lexicographic researches for many clients. She is a member of the Dictionary Society of North America, the Association of Computational Linguistics, and the European Association for Lexicography.

Indespensable

Should fiction writers use Roget's Thesaurus? I've read and heard arguments on both sides. Those who say "No" think that writers using It write overblown prose, using a long word where a shorter one would be better.
I disagree. There are times when the first word that comes to mind is the easy word that does not get at the real meaning of a character's thought, or the feeling I want to convey. If I just write, "the room was cold," I've shortchanged the reader. How cold and why does the temperature matter? But if I show that people wear two pairs of thick wool socks just to sit inside, or get up three times in the night to make sure the baby's bed cap is on his head, or have another character remark that the mercury has frozen in the thermometer, the reader feels the cold.

This thesaurus is not only a word-finder that lets me locate synonyms to vary my writing vocabulary, it jogs my brain into new was of thinking about what I'm writing.

This book lies on my desk waiting to help me write better. It must work, because I've won one Spur Award and been a finalist for another.

Replaces the Original Roget's

This thesaurus is the best I've ever found, and the first one I've purchased in 25 years, since I bought my copy of Roget's. The editor has produced an exhaustive list of categories, which no other thesaurus has, that I've seen. However, I bought this hardbound after I bought the paperback. I thought the hardcover version would be larger and easier to read. Not so. The hardbound is the same dimensions and the same 6 - 7 pt print size as the paperback. I recommend the hardbound, though, because it's surdier and will last longer than the paperback. Either way, it's fine work!

I think Roget's is the best thesaurus out there, but HOLY COW! THIS version is ridiculous!! I practically need a microscope to read it! Seriously, the print is smaller than the words on those little pamphlets in OTC meds! The font is smaller than 8. Again, I think Roget's is the best, but I can't use this at all! I wish I hadn't wasted my money.

About the Author
I am Barbara Haskett Jones Harman. I love God, my children, step children, writing and painting. I lived my childhood during the great depression that began after the crash of 1929. I met my husband, father of our children in 1942 we were at war. I had our first son in 1943, and then my husband was drafted into the army. I lived with my mother until the war was over. Ted came home in 1946 and we began adding to our family. My mother in law was from the hills of Kentucky. She told me many stories of incidents that had happen there. I felt a desire to put them in writing. however raising a family was a priority, everything was put on hold. my husband died in 1973. We had raised our children and they are living their own lives. Later I met my prince charming and married again. My husband discovered my box of unfinished manuscripts in my belongings. He began in insisting I complete them and would not give up on the idea. My prince died leaving me a widow again. By now, I have developed a deep love for the word in writing. I have published two books with AuthorHouse; Shadow of the Pines, a story of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Kentucky and Kimberly’s Song back in Idaho. I fill my days with loving my many children, writing and adding a hobby, painting. The photograph was taken by my grandson, Jason Denver, Spokane WA

About the Author

Professor Bernd Bertsche earned his degree and doctorate in mechanical engineering at the Universitaet Stuttgart. Afterwards, he worked for Mercedes-Benz AG in the passenger car development unit followed by a position as professor at the University of Applied Sciences in Albstadt-Sigmaringen. Later, he was appointed at the Universitaet Stuttgart. Since 2001 Professor Bertsche is the ordinary and head for the Institute of Machine Components at the Universitaet Stuttgart.

There is no current book in the field other than this one, so the question is only if it is suitable, since there are no alternatives.
It is a good book. Some of the design process stuff is a bit lightweight, but that is only a minor quibble.
If you work in automotive powertrains or teach a course in automotive engineering, you need this book.

Good, but it could have been better.

First, this book focuses on mechanical transmissions (gearboxes) and barely mentions automatic transmission design and construction. It is rather incomplete for its title "Automotive Transmissions". A more appropriate title would have been "Automotive Gearboxes".
The book sells for roughly $100 for the first edition and at over $200 for the second edition. Unless you are a technical expert working in the field of automotive powertrain, it is not worth the money. The book is highly technical and for the casual reader - even being a mechanical engineer - too theoretical. I would recommend it to engineers involved in train gear design, university professors that teach courses on automotive powertrains, or transmission/powertrain automotive engineers.

The price of being a super hero

This book is a short entertaining read, worth your buck. Micro God helps to add emotional context to what it's really like to be a super hero. The protagonist, fearless to the point of apathy, is a character who's past is fascinatingly blurry with a future much the same. I look forward to seeing future work from this author.

Phenomenal (warning: spoilers)

Absolutely brilliant. You did an amazing job creating a plot that wasn't over done, yet had an extreme amount of possibilities to work with. I really enjoyed reading something so original that avoids so many clich�s. The science of how Clarke cannot create food was very interesting as well, and it reminded me of Jurassic park (in the sense of made up science sounding legitimate).
You did an amazing job creating likable characters, and balancing out some bad traits with redeemable qualities. Richard especially, considering times where he switches from being a bored, grumpy man to being amusing or happy. It also made me feel a strange sense of satisfaction when he killed Freddie G, because he mentions a few times about how death and murder don't entertain or bother him much anymore, yet when Chloe dies, he feels grief and intense sadness. However, he also feels the need for revenge and finds a sort of joy when he gets his revenge.
The setting I found very immersive, even though it didn't travel very far. I don't quite realize the small number of settings in the book until the end. You did an amazing job on giving the environments depth and description, even with little things like the dirty chairs in the beginning.

Me being a young writer, found a lot of joy and inspiration in your story. I hope to see more work from you, and you can bet I'll buy it!

Diamond in the Ruff

I won't lie. I bought this book due to the shameless plugging done by the author on his YouTube channel Krimson Rogue (which by the way, if you've ever wanted to watch comparisons between beloved books and hated adaptations). I was pleasantly surprised though. I have been a long time supporter of self published authors and, while I can say I don't like all the self published books I read (because honestly anyone can write some words and self publish now a days) I can say I occasionally stumble into one that should be published. This is one of those.

Author K.R. Martin wrote a fascinating character and faces the reality of having all the powers you always pretended you had as a kid. The hero is remarkably interesting to read about and makes the book fly past faster than it already goes.

I don't want to give much away as the book isn't long and it's hard to say something spoiler free. What I can say is. The characters are great, the story is great, and the writing style is great. The whole thing is just...great. I can say wholeheartedly that I will be on the look out for more by Mr. Martin.
