About the Author

Alan D. Evans, M.S., CPA

Alan Evans is currently a faculty member at Moore College of Art and Design and Montgomery County Community College teaching a variety of computer science and business courses. He holds a B.S. in Accounting from Rider University and an M.S. in Information Systems from Drexel University, and he is a certified public accountant. After a successful career in business, Alan finally realized his true calling was education. He has been teaching at the college level since 2000. Alan enjoys giving presentations at technical conferences and meets regularly with computer science faculty and administrators from other colleges to discuss curriculum development and new methods of engaging students.

Kendall E. Martin, Ph.D.
Kendall has been teaching since 1988 at a number of institutions, including Villanova University, DeSales University, Arcadia University, Ursinus College, County College of Morris, and Montgomery County Community College, at both the undergraduate and master’s degree level. Kendall’s education includes a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rochester and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. She has industrial experience in research and development environments (AT&T Bell Laboratories) as well as experience from several start-up technology firms. At Ursinus College, Kendall developed a successful faculty training program for distance education instructors, and she makes conference presentations during the year.

Mary Anne Poatsy, MBA, CFP
Mary Anne is an adjunct faculty member at Montgomery County Community College, teaching various computer application and concepts courses in face-to-face and online environments. Mary Anne holds a B.A. in Psychology and Elementary Education from Mount Holyoke College and an MBA in Finance from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management. Mary Anne has more than nine years of educational experience, ranging from elementary and secondary education to Montgomery County Community College, Muhlenberg College, and Bucks County Community College, as well as training in the professional environment. Prior to teaching, Mary Anne was a vice president at Shearson Lehman Hutton in the Municipal Bond Investment Banking department.

eBook has no access code but is otherwise complete

The book is complete, except for the whole no access code for the website. Product description says the eBook may or may not come with a web access code. For $123 you would think it would. Why an extra $40 gets you the code is beyond me. They don't even sell the code separately (like some places - have the book but no code, $10 or whatever for 3 month access). So be warned. Why do they even sell these books without codes? Why do colleges make you pay hundreds for books just for a stupid alpha-numeric string? Retarded.

I had to buy it for a course, but it's actually an ok book, easy to read for beginners. I'm already a worked in the industry, so it wasn't hard for me at all. But I thought it was pretty easy to read. Honestly, going by that old writer's rule: Do I think I could give it to my mother or grandmother and she could read and understand it? Yes.

I think it, like all textbooks, is ridiculously overpriced, but they are in control, hard to fight it.

GOOD book!

The person who wrote the first review of this book might have had a bad professor; the book is not to blame for his/her lack of comprehension. It is a well written, meticulously researched, and concise text.
If one has not had much experience with philosophy, historiography can seem obtuse. Beverley Southgate does a fine job of distilling scores of crucial developments in the reading and writing of human history into a slim volume.
I would not advise a novice to pick up _History: What and Why?_ without access to a seasoned scholar for consultation. Just because a publisher calls a book an "introductory survey" (on the back of the paperback ed. I have) does not mean it is a simple book without substance. As are many things, history is often best learned in good company.

The Best Undergraduate Textbook I've Seen for Genetics

I've just completed my first semester teaching Genetics at a small liberal arts college in Indiana. Because I was jumping into the position I was stuck using the text previously designed for the class. Almost a third of the book was classical genetics, which I enjoy, but was certainly overplayed. Molecular Biology areas were a jumble of terms to learn and lists to inscribe into their brains. The problems in the book did not reflect the material in the text, leaving the class pretty much upset with the book. By midterm it was time to find another sources for the class.
I found myself reaching for other texts, and "Genetics, Analysis and Principles" turned out to be the jewel. It is well balanced, very clearly written, and does not spend its time making students read long memory lists of genes or proteins that the class is going to forget less than two weeks after the term. I think this is largely reflected by the way he wrote the book; with input from students.
Reading the intro I was afraid that this text was going to be way over into the experimental design/ data side which I've seen in other texts mean "no content". Not so this text; experimental design has been written into the book to describe genetics and content, not replace it. I think what is truely unique about this book is the use of scientific process as a way to teach concepts. I wish I had more books like this one for other courses. I hope Dr. Brooker's format for Biology (and yes other science courses) is adopted for other courses.
If you are considering a text for your Genetics classes, I think you will be very pleased with this book.

Excellent text for self-directed learning

I used this textbook in a distance learning course and have found it to be invaluable to my learnng experience.
For anyone who has taken Genetics, you'll account for the fact that it is not an easy course. Taking it without a professor present is even more challenging. Luckily this text is well written and easy to follow. The author uses a mix of theory and experiment examples to drive important concepts home. The language is not dry like in many Biology texts. Instead, it is easy to read, almost to the point of being enjoyable.
There are a few things I really liked:
1. The illustrations in this book are paramount to learning difficult concepts. When explaining experimental procedures, the text is accompanied by step-by-step instuctions and illustrations as to how the experiment was carried out. This proved helpful in visualizing the procedure.
2. Each chapter is well organized and easy to understand. The author speaks in easy to understand terms (that is if you have had previous Biology courses.) His writing style is dynamic and never boring.
3. Difficult concepts are often explained more than once. Sometimes the book gets a little ahead of itself, but page numbers and chapters are always given so you can read about things you don't understand.
4. The end of each chapter provides the reader with provocative critical thinking questions that solidify important points from the chapter. Best of all, even numbered answers are given in the back so you can check yourself without hunting through the book.
Overall I'd give this book an A and it will remain in my collection of Biology texts.

Sudent Friendly; Sometimes Wordy but Easy to Understand

This book explains genetics concepts in a clear manner. It is was described to me as both teacher friendly and student friendly. I can easily see how it could indeed be both, though I can only comment on it from a teacher p.o.v. It is the book I've chosen to prepare my class from, and I would highly recommend it for any Genetics class.

Good value for the money

Part 1 - history - I like this section very much. He starts with the "mandatory" references to the ancient kingdoms and Hwarang warriors but builds that into a nice bit of background for the emergence of modern TKD. From there he does a nice section on the "Formative Years of Taekwondo", complete with great details, photos, pictures of old organizational patches, and attention to all of the movers and shakers (including Gen. Choi). He also gets into some modern developments and the students creeds and such. His treatment of the "Formative Years" is not as in-depth as Dakin Burdick's articles but it covers all of the key points and is very accessible to read. For this section alone, I would highly recommend this book to my students and to all Taekwondo students.

Part 2 - philosophy - This section covers meditation, Ki and the poom-se.

I like the ideas he presents and I like the inclusion of medititaion training in Taekwondo. My only real issue with this section is his combining of Indian, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean terms and ideas and terms in his dealing with this topic. I would have prefered to see the use of all Korean terms and concepts within the context of his very book title. Regardless, the concepts and ideas are great... just maybe not "Traditional Taekwondo".

The "Ki" section is similar, with a mix of Chinese, Korean, and Japanese terms and concepts. There are a bunch of exercises that may be fun to try although I don't recall ever seeing the real close pigeon-toed (thighs touching) stance shown in the exercises (which he does credit to kumdo though).

The poom-se section is excellent though and provides a nice bit of history (including some interesting tie-ins to Kata ), rationale, uses, and elements of training. It also provides a concise "meaning/philosophy" of the main sets of forms (Palgwe, Taegeuk, and Chang Hon). For this bit, I also recommend this to my students

The next section covers various drills and step sparring, none of which is particularly new but could be of interest. The "Ho Shin Sool" section didn't impress me at all. Most of the techniques shown look like Hapkido (which is only mentioned in a quick way as a "possible" source for some techniques) but there is no evidence of distraction, balance disruption, or tight control (I like seeing the elbows tight on joint locks for control). There also are no releases or finishes shown for the techniques. Again, students will be getting their actual intruction in class, not from a book... but I don't like this part much.

This is followed by "Self Defense for Women" - same as above but the lack of distractions, finishes, releases and such make it even more glaringly incomplete. The section on awareness and avoidance tips are good though.

The appendices cover some terminology, although no Hangeul is given unfortunately. There is also a nice 2 page listing of his sources.

Overall, for $20, this is a nice handy reference for Taekwondo students especially on the historical background and on the forms (poomse) material. Ideally the "physical skills" aren't learned from a book anyway and the instructors can cover this.

Good for the History and Philosophy Parts

"Traditional Taekwondo: Core Techniques, History, and Philosophy" by Doug Cook is a book that all Taekwondo practitioners will want on their book shelf. It's also a book that will appeal to other Korean martial artists and even those who don't practice Korean arts but would like to understand more about the "foot, hand, Way" from the land of the morning calm.

The book is divided into three parts, the first is History and Culture, the second is Philosophy, and the final section focuses on Technique. The first two sections were excellent and will help all those who practice the art of Taekwondo better understand the history, culture, and philosophy found within the art. These are the sections that will also appeal to other Korean martial artists and even other arts. The third part, Technique, did an alright job of showing a few techniques from the Taekwondo curriculum, but was not as strong or as interesting as the first two parts.

It is extremely difficult to boil a country's history, especially a country like Korea that has a long and interesting history, into a few short chapters. I think Cook did a very good job of narrowing the history down to a few of the most relevant and interesting historical references, starting with the legend of Tan-gun. He briefly covers the Three Kingdoms and some of the key players in Korea's history. He has a bit on the Japanese Occupation from 1910 to 1945 which is important regarding Taekwodo's development. The next chapter on the Formative Years of Taekwondo is very interesting and will be valuable for all those that want to know more history of the art.

The Philosophy part had chapters on the role of meditation in traditional taekwondo, the development and use of combat ki, and the relevance of poom-se in traditional taekwondo. These chapters, again, were interesting and educational. I do think they provide the reader with a more in depth look at taekwondo than just the popular sport sparring.

The third, and longest part, focuses on technique. It is the longest because it is primarily pictures, illustrating the techniques chosen for the text. The chapters cover conditioning exercises first, and then a chapter describing training methods. While I agree with most of what was written, there were a few things that I would have written differently, especially the description of ho shin sool, or self-defense techniques. It is correct, that ho shin sool techniques provide solutions to grabs as written, but ho shin sool techniques also include defenses to strikes, kicks, and initiating moves.

I liked the guidelines regarding training, especially the emphasis on respect and safety. Then, for the techniques actually demonstrated with pictures, there are 18 Il Su Sik (One-Step Sparring) combinations, 8 Sam Su Sik (Three-Step Sparring) combinations, 18 Ho Shin Sool (self-defense techniques), and 16 defenses for women. You can look at this a couple ways. First, just look at this section as a small sampling of techniques you find in the taekwondo curriculum. That's what it is. And as a small sampling, Cook did a good job of adding it. However, to learn the techniques from the book would be extremely difficult, just as learning any martial art from a book is not recommended, you need a live instructor and a partner to train with. I did have a fundamental disagreement with the way some of the ho shin sool techniques were demonstrated because correct body positions, movement, and weight placement were not illustrated, and I also have difficulties with a couple of the techniques entirely. (i.e. blocking a pipe with your forearm) However, it is not the purpose of this review to engage in practicality of techniques and so forth. So enough said.

There is a short conclusion, and then the appendix sections. Appendix A was extremely interesting. It told of a training experience with Grandmaster Gyoo Hyun Lee in Korea. I found it interesting and it also made me homesick to go back and train in Korea. It really made me yearn for my next trip over there to train. There were also some Korean/English terms and few martial arts organizations listed. Nice additions to the book, especially the training experience with Grandmaster Lee.

For the History and Philosophy sections, I rate this book a 5, and for the Techniques section a 3. Therefore, the book is a 4 overall and a book I recommend all taekwondo stylists read and learn from. I also recommend it to any others who want to better understand the history, philosophy, and techniques of traditional taekwondo.

Photo illustrated manual

There are many things I liked about this book. The photos featuring both males and females are helpful in understanding Taekwondo and the basic hand/fist and stance positions. Sometimes words are not enough, you have to see. (sometimes seeing is not enough, you have to do!). I teach taiji and am not familiar with Taekwondo, so this book was very helpful in understanding the principles, history and philosophy of the art.

I especially liked the chart on page 75 called Taegeuk and Palgwe Poom-Se Philosophy. It explains the connections of the I Ching Symbols and the form. Example: Thunder: Just as a fearsome thunderstorm passes leaving rain freshened air in its wake, these forms teach us to act bravely in the face of danger knowing it too shall pass.

The charts on pages 132 & 133 Vital points both front and rear. Useful!

Like tai chi the author says, "...traditional taekwondo is, above all, a holistic pursuit and therefore not limited merely to physical technique. One cannot overemphasize the importance of respect when practicing a potentially lethal art. By the same token all the courtesy in the world will not come to one's aid when set upon by a willful aggressor resulting in the development of collateral skills by the sincere practitioner. However, as we have seen.....organize the body and spirit into a mindful source of focused energy prepared to provide self-protection."

This is a good, all round textbook, well worth the money and the time to read it. It has something to offer all involved the the martial arts.

A Fast Read

A fast read. A good first book for Greg Scott. It gave me a much better understanding on the 'Bullseye" breach (counting myself as one of its millions of victims). There are parts of the book where you can definitely tell it was written by a "rookie" author (no disrespect intended), but overall, Mr. Scott keeps the story moving and interesting. Being in the IT / Information Security field myself, I recognized many of the issues we face in the industry, especially the attitudes from IT and business executives that look at security as a burden and not an absolute necessity. I look forward to Mr. Scott's future work.

I loved this book and you will too!

Bullseye Breach is a fictionalization of the recent security lapses at major retailers and a plan for how to fight back against such breaches. The IT side of this book is right on. For starters, the method used by the bad guys to hack into the retailer highlights the role of social engineering. Access to Bullseye's intranet is through a simple password gleaned from a third-party vendor via "phishing" --- the technique hackers use to get someone to click on a link in an email and/or download something. The hackers dress up the link so the person being targeted ignores any security warnings from the browser or operating system. A similar technique is also used in the book to gain administrator passwords for the retailer's intranet. The message is clear and can't be stressed enough: know your sources. Don't click on or download from anyone you're not 110% sure of. And, don't ignore security warnings from your antivirus program or operating system.

Beyond a blueprint for how the recent credit-card scams might have happened and how to prevent or deal with the hacking, Bullseye Breach is a great read. There are many characters, but each is idiosyncratic enough to be memorable in their own right. The bad guys are plausible and unfortunate. The main hero is adorable, with his loud sweater and inappropriate footwear. (You can just see this nerdy man in action.) Scott's prose is fluid and easy to read, gently propelling the reader onward through the twists and turns of the breach and resolution. I loved this book, and you will too!

I am just over 1/2 way through the ebook (55% - just (re-)read the sample "Regina").
Sad to say, some of the characters came out a little 'caricatured' and 'sterotypical' - specifically the "bad russian mobster" and his 'favourite' nephew. While I found myself visualising these people, they were more like a '1D' representation.
I do appreciate the tech-side (being more than a little paranoid and in ITSec myself), but some of the characterisations could have done with some some more polish.
I will continue reading until I finish (I bought it this morning, should be done sometime tomorrow).
It is a page-swiper (it is an ebook :)
I will admit, parts of it remind me of Clifford Stoll's classic "The Cuckoo's Egg" - which is a "good thing" :)
