Activities Keep Me Going and Going...good info, just kind of boring.

I bought this book to go along with my schooling as an Activity Director. "Activities Keep Me Going and Going" arrived on time as promised in great shape. It was brand new and covered in protective plastic. It is super thick....way thicker than I thought! It has a ton of typos in it, but I'm super anal when it comes to that. It's not the book that I would have chosen for school, as it is not extremely exciting or interesting. It does do the job on information that pertains to my future certificate, but it would be better if it was interesting. This seems to be the book most people use for this type of information. Maybe in the future it could be a little more fun.

A Fabulous Python Book

This is an excellent Python book that teaches the language through fascinating cryptographic algorithms. First about the organization of the book. Very pleasing typeset and nice font size. Code is written inside boxes. The layout and author's style make it an excellent read. The book is accompanies with the author's website where all programs are available for download, though author rightfully asks readers to type in the program themselves. There is even a 'diff' program that author provides in his website which compares readers's program to one on the book, thereby facilitating faster troubleshooting. The book has 24 chapters. Most chapters have a quote that is very relevant from security point of view.

The first chapter gets the reader introduced into cryptography. I asked my 10 yr old daughter to follow along on few chapters. She got fascinated by the hands on exercises in the first chapter (Author asks for the cipher wheel to be photocopied and cut to make paper ciphers). Kids will have great fun with coded messages while introducing to crypto concepts. Next few chapters gets a reader to install Python (version 3) in Windows, Linux or MAC. For a novice, the instructions and screenshots are sure to help. The shell, string functions, writing programs and executing them should become easy once reader goes through first 5 chapters. There are exercises in the book's website which are essential to master the concepts. All programming language constructs are tied together in the chapter 6 where Caesar cipher is implemented.

It is really interesting to learn Python through one domain area. The reader masters both Python and Crypto concepts. Author shows how Caesar cipher can be hacked easily and then explains and then implements a transposition cipher. Programs are only as good as it is implemented. There could be bugs introduced in the system. There is a chapter on writing a test program in Python. When needed math concepts are also introduced (chapter 14 - modular arithmetic; Chapter 23 - prime numbers). Other ciphers explained and implemented in Python in this book are Affine cipher, Substitution cipher, Vigenere cipher, and one time pad cipher. The last chapter takes the reader into public key cryptography and RSA Cipher.

This book is a delight to learn Python for all levels of people. I know few kids who want to write apps and start learning in a quick fashion with an aim of producing something. In the long run, without a fundamental strong background it will hurt. Python is an ideal first language these days (not BASIC anymore!) and this books perfectly fits the need. The author's writing style, systematic focus on examples and exercises makes it very easy to learn. As a byproduct to learning Python, you also learn cryptography which is a fascinating discipline. I also recommend Author's other Python books highly - Invent Your Own Computer Games with Python, 2nd Edition and Making Games with Python & Pygame.

Great book for learning python

I started reading this book being familiar with python but not with doing encryption via python. The lessons don't assume the reader knows anything about programming. A more experienced programmer might want to skip the first few 6 chapters as they deal with string manipulation basics and simple ciphers. The book lays a good foundation on how to encrypt text and decrypt text. I appreciated that it was a beginners book that covered an interesting subject beyond the usual array of 'Hello World' programs.

After reading a portion of the book I can truly say that this book is a must have book for any individual interested & looking to learn cryptography! This book is incredibly captivating for the average soul who has no prior knowledge in cryptography. Cryptography is a very interesting subject, and although you don't get into the crazy stuff yet in this book, the knowledge you learn from this book is amazing and a necessity for future books. Here are a few benefits reading this book.

- I was always slightly confused with Cryptography. This book is GREAT for beginners. I am never too confused like I usually am.
- After reading a big portion of the book, I am excited for what's coming next in the book! This book is captivating and is a fun journey going through it.
- I love the subtle humor, which makes the book that much more enjoyable.

If you want to get into hacking, you won't become a l33t hacker from this book, but reading this book WILL introduce you to it. I can't think of any other book that will help you learn so much and keep you interested as much as this book. I always loved the idea of cryptography and this book really helped me grow in terms of crystallographic knowledge.

a really great read

I ended up really enjoying this book, I was kindda surprised because I didn't like the way it started out. Damian and Alex have been friends forever, but go to different colleges. Damians family don't approve of Alex because he is gay.
Then out of the clear blue sky Damian thinks he may be bisexual and asks Alex to experiment with him. That is the part I didn't like,I think their should have been some angst to lead up to this shocking confession. I am still giving this book 5 stars because the rest of the book more than made up for it. So if the first chapter is a little unbelievable, just stick with it, you will be glad you did!

A Sexy Debut

We don't always know what we want, and sometimes we have to lose someone before we realize how much they mean to us. So it is for childhood friends Damian Garza and Alex Murphy in this sexy debut by Stella Huerto. Taking place during what is set to be the final summer before they leave college and go their separate ways, the story follows the progression of two young men from friends to lovers, while life does its utmost to stand in their path.

Damian has long since suspected he's bisexual. However, given his strictly religious parents and their dim view of homosexuality, it's little wonder he has kept this fact about himself secret. It's natural, too, that he should want to explore his sexuality before finishing college to return home to work on his family's orange grove, and who better to help him than Alex, his gay best friend? Yet, as what begins as a simple experiment takes on a greater significance than he ever anticipated, Damian's inner conflict comes to a head. He can either brave his parents' condemnation, or turn his back forever on Alex and any chance they might have of a life together.

Alex has always found Damian attractive, and so is both flattered and excited when his friend chooses him to experiment with. Yet, even Alex is pleasantly surprised by Damian's passion and his own intense reaction to it. Not that it's anything serious. Damian will probably never come out to his parents, and he himself has the promise of a dream job in Europe. But when Alex finds himself thinking about Damian more and more, missing him when family crises get in the way of their precious time together, he is forced to confront the truth. He has broken the rules and let himself become too deeply involved, something that could put their entire friendship in jeopardy.

Though Campus Visit is undoubtedly worthy of its erotic status, what really struck me was the very real tenderness between the heroes. Damian and Alex are there for each other emotionally as well as physically, and I found their journey from friends to lovers incredibly touching. For anyone who enjoys sizzling romances, featuring plenty of man on man action but with genuine emotion behind it, I highly recommend this book.

This Book.....

UGH!!!!!! A very well written book! I own it on my kindle and I'm very happy! :) I loved this book. The author did a very well job with interweaving the complexity of human relationships and the sudden insecurities that may pop up, in a certain circumstance. The two main characters were lovely, and a delight to read their story as they both go through their own problem(s) and issue(s) at the same time.

I fell in love with this book because I currently am an Undergrad student and because I'm a HUGE Romantic and there were many parts in here that touched home to me, the little intimacies, cuddling, spending time together, just the whole essence of WANTING to be together just made my heart warm and put a smile on my face every time I thought about them. Such wonderful characters... I think I might be in love with one of them (or both!) ;)

Very well written story! I highly recommend it! :)

This book introduces Mead's pioneering work on the design of neural networks and their implementation in analog VLSI systems. Mead observes first that the nervous systems of even simple animals contain computing paradigms far more effective than any found in currently available computers. He then shows how the powerful organizing principles of these nervous systems can be realized in silicon integrated circuits. His examples include silicon neural systems that replicate animal senses - chips that can see and hear!

make silicon eyes and ears

The book describes an interesting niche in VLSI design. Most VLSI chips implement digital logic. But Mead took a different tack, emphasising the analog mode of operation of the transistors. In most digital electronics texts, this regime of current-voltage performance is mostly cursorily dealt with.

What Mead did was use this often where the current through the source and drain was some exponential function of the voltage at the transistor gate. An oversimplification, perhaps, but it captures the essence of the book. By tying together transistors, Mead was able to build circuits that emulated the performance of the eye and ear. The text then uses these to make silicon chips that might mimic the biological sensors.

The book also embodies Mead's approach to understanding the brain and its neural networks. He claims that the problem is very hard. And that we can usefully make progress by looking at the brain's input sensors. As these are much simpler to understand and implement.

Mead carried the ideas here into Synaptics. A Silicon Valley startup that he co-founded.

Sadly, the book is out of print. (Why??) The prices of $129 and higher by third party sellers are way excessive.

The classic text for this kind of circuitry.

Assuming you know something about CMOS and VLSI
design, this is the classic text to cover the
broad base to get started in understanding how
one goes about designing actual hardware for
various neural network architectures. Both
analog and digital approaches are discussed, and
the circuits are clearly explained with lots of
schematics and plenty of derivative mathematics
that show why a particular approach has utility
for a given problem. There are a lot of new
books (Mead has a new one out) but they owe a
large debt to this book.

absolute classic, though kind of dated

Carver Mead was one of the of the pioneers of the idea of a "silicon neuron" back in the 1980's. The interesting part is that he sees the direct analog between synthetic neurons and conductance-based models. Instead of membrane capacitance being charged by ions in the neurons, VLSI capacitors are charged by electrons, and so forth.

By now, the book is somewhat dated - a lot of advances have happened since it was published - but it's still a classic, and highly recommended for anyone interested in the possibility of using analog computing for modeling neurons and networks.
