Required Reading for Crew

I was so glad to hear Julie Perry decided to rerelease The Insiders' Guide to Becoming a Yacht Stewardess completely updated and revised. This is the first book I read about yachting when I joined the industry and have kept it on each boat I've worked as a well-used reference.
Julie's step-by-step of how-to-get-a-job-on-a-yacht and what to expect should be read by everyone entertaining the idea of jumping on board. She shares her first hand knowledge of what life is like on a yacht and what the job entails.
If yachting looks glamorous to you, BUY THIS BOOK! Julie tells it like it is and you will have a much broader understanding of what is required of you onboard after being hired. Her straight-forward, easy-to-navigate style on the page will walk you through the courses needed, who to talk to, where to go, and what to do to get hired.
Anyone looking to take their love of the sea and travel to a professional level should read this well-written and well-researched book. It's chock full of great information and amusing stories of life as a crew member.

Great Book!

I never read a book so fast in my life. This book was so helpful to get a clear understanding on how to get into the yachting industry and becoming a stewardess. My favorite parts are the I Must Confess sections throughout the book (I wish there was more!). I always enjoy hearing about people's experiences. There was humor throughout the chapters which really kept me intrigued in reading. Being a writer myself for a local boating magazine in New York, I always try to add humor to my stories. People love to laugh, and you will most likely laugh when reading Julie's book! I definitely recommend reading this to whoever is interested in this line of work. If you are not interested, then you can still get great stories and information about the yachting life. I really want to become a stewardess because being out on the water and on boats is my passion. I just have to finished college first and then I am on my way at starting my future in the yachting industry. I will have this book along side me to help me through the path to success!

A MUST have GUIDE for all aspiring yachties!

This book contains ALL you need to know to get in to the luxury yacht industry! I, too, am a midwestern lady with a gypsy soul, and was unfulfilled with my 8-5 desk job. I was lucky enough to meet a gentleman in the industry who led me to Julie's book....I ordered it immediately! I've never read a book so fast and had a hard time putting it down! Aside from all the helpful "how to" information, I LOVED reading Julie's confessions from her years aboard these vessels and would often envision myself in her shoes. This book is so well written, that as I read it (multiple times) I felt as though Julie was a personal friend coaching me, encouraging me and helping me to pave out this new path. I am now down in Florida working my way towards a career in the industry! A HUGE thanks to Julie for this book and all her help! I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone wanting to get in to the industry....or even anyone who is just curious about the private luxury yacht industry!

Five stars with a caveat

I almost rated this book four stars. This book is a bit lazy, and many topics have been covered in a much better way in Dominic O'Brien's "Brillant Memory". But there are three things in this book that are not in O'Brien's book.
One: The system for remembering names and faces is superior.
Two: The system for the alphabet is superior.
Three: The number system is different and I think a little easier/quicker to learn. The caveat on that is that I think the Person/Action/Object system lasts longer and s better for long term memory. I still recommend checking out Ron's way.

I go to college so anything that will help me cut down the amount of hours I need to maintain a 4.0 is a blessing. This book did that and for that alone it is worth reading.

I can't recommend this book as the first one though. In order I recommend:
--Best Intro: Moon Walking With Einstein... Seriously, read this book before you do anything else.
--Then: Brilliant Memory
--Then: How to improve your memory in just 30 days

I'm also a big fan of Cal Newport, but that's another story. Buy this book, read it, absorb it, and have a good day =)

I always thought I had a poor memory - turns out I don't!

Let's get the errors out of the way - yes they exist, numerous typos. If you choose to focus on that and miss the point of the book then you just wasted your own money because the information is terrific. (Maybe when they fix the typos the price will shoot up to $22.99, I'm happy with the $2.99!). Good, now we can focus on the book!

I am a 41-year-old mother of three and am hoping to return to school this fall. I was looking for a book on improving study skills to retain information because I believed my memory to be in sad shape. In two days I have learned to count in Japanese, I've learned the presidents in order backwards and fowards, a portion of the Bill of Rights and a foundation for learning and retaining that will be invaluable. They really should teach this in school from an early age. I've been reading it with my daughter and am downloading a copy for my son, who is also heading off to college.

I bought three books on memory (Your Memory - Kenneth Higbee, Remember, Remember - Ed Cooke and this one). The Higbee book covers a lot of background on memory and how the brain functions and may eventually teach me how to improve my own memory, but it's been a slow read. I have taken a small stab at the Ed Cooke book, but again it has been slow to warm up. This book dives right in with exercises and quick understanding to produce immediate results. I appreciated how the author used certain lists that appeared to not make sense, only to have them turn into valuable lessons further along in the book.

Well worth the money!

Very practical

Although not the best written memory book, and not error-free, this is a very practical memory book that focuses on a powerful memory technique: Loci. I have tried it, and although I think it cannot be a applied to every part of your life (as the author suggests), it really enables you to store long lists of information. In the end, the author is a memory champion, so he knows what he is talking about.

But the essence of his technique can really be summarized in the following phrase: "Your memory works with images. So any information you need to memorize must be first converted into an image". Of course there are many considerations you need to know, so for 3 and something bucks, it is worth it.

I began reading this book the other night and could not put it down. This is a must read for anyone who has children and a more important read for anyone about to have children!!!

Being a father of two I can speak from experience and authority when I say this is one of the best books I have read regarding our children. I can also say it made me sick to my stomach. I have made every mistake when it comes to raising and teaching my daughter and son. It is never to late to change and because of this book not only do I have the desire to change and learn more, I want to increase awareness for all those who have children and are about to have children.

I want nothing more in this life then to see my children fulfill there greatest potential. So thank you to the author Hans-Peter Becker for opening my eyes and mind. I will now help my children help themselves..

Peter Beckers secrets of musical education

Peters book is a significant new approach to learn and teach music with spectacular positive developmental effects, and not only for children. Even „oldies“ can become „musical goldies.“ Essential instructions and impulses are given in Peter’s book. He also draws a conclusion about the widely held assumption that people are either musical or non-musical. Following his theory this assumption is wrong.

His method utilizes all our senses. He deeply understands that our senses are „The Gates Of Learning.“ His aim is to overcome developmental obstacles like unreflected doctrines and paradigms. Therefore he also integrates aspects of the education methods of Maria Montessori „Help me to do it myself“.

After reading Peters book I deeply understood that music is a core need, not unlike eating, breathing and loving. This book made me sensible to understand, that with Peters profound musical education method you really can support a child in his innate desire to be creative and to develop a huge variety of emotional, social and intellectual skills beyond musical skills.( e.g. intrinsic motivation, overcoming learning resistance and obstacles, turning mistakes into successes, building cooperative relationships and at the same time developing competitive, emotional and intellectual skills.)

“No other activity requires children to make as many decisions simultaneously and to execute these over a certain period of time.“ Peter explains.

Last year I met Peter in Los Angeles to get more information about the teaching concept in his Modern Music School. He gave me the opportunity to learn more about his unique approach and I understood that he feels a deep sense of responsibility to focus on well trained teachers to transfer his concept.

Peter’s book gives very important suggestions and strategies. Even the feeling of stagnation and frustration in the learning process - the so called “plateau“ - can be perfectly managed through this method.

Every parent should read this before it's too late!

Everyone should read this book (and some others that are suggested from the author) before raising a child. I'm lucky that I read it soon enough.
Not knowing anything about this subject, I was confused and didn't know where to start from. This book is definitely a good start and will ignite a spark to dig into it even further.
I really can't believe how concepts like these, that have been around for so long, are still far from becoming common knowledge..
Too bad that my parents and teachers weren't familiar with those concepts back then.

About the Author
William Pride (Ph.D., Louisiana State University) is a professor of marketing in the Mays Business School, Texas A&M University. In addition to this text, he is co-author of a market-leading principles of marketing book. Dr. Pride's research interests include advertising, promotion, and distribution channels, and his research articles have appeared in major professional journals, such as the Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Marketing Research, the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, and the Journal of Advertising. Dr. Pride is a member of the American Marketing Association, Academy of Marketing Science, Society for Marketing Advances, and the Marketing Management Association. He has received the Marketing Fellow Award from the Society of Marketing Advances and the Marketing Innovation Award from the Marketing Management Association. Both of these are lifetime achievement awards.

Robert J. Hughes (Ph.D., University of North Texas) specializes in business administration and college instruction. He has taught Introduction to Business for more than 35 years both on campus and online for Richland College, one of seven campuses that are part of the Dallas County Community College District. In addition to BUSINESS and FOUNDATIONS OF BUSINESS, published by Cengage Learning, he has authored college textbooks in personal finance and business mathematics and served as a content consultant for two popular national television series, "It's Strictly Business" and "Dollars & Sense: Personal Finance for the 21st Century." He is active in many academic and professional organizations and has served as a consultant and investment adviser to individuals, businesses, and charitable organizations. Dr. Hughes is the recipient of three different Teaching in Excellence Awards at Richland College. According to Dr. Hughes, after 35 years of teaching Introduction to Business, the course is still exciting: "There's nothing quite like the thrill of seeing students succeed, especially in a course like Introduction to Business, which provides the foundation for not only academic courses, but also life in the real world."

Jack R. Kapoor (Ed.D., Northern Illinois University) is professor of business and economics in the Business and Technology Division at the College of DuPage, where he has taught Introduction to Business, Marketing, Management, Economics, and Personal Finance since 1969. He previously taught at Illinois Institute of Technology's Stuart School of Management, San Francisco State University's School of World Business, and other colleges. Professor Kapoor was awarded the Business and Services Division's Outstanding Professor Award. He has also served as an Assistant National Bank Examiner for the U.S. Treasury Department and as an international trade consultant to Bolting Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Mumbai, India. Dr. Kapoor is known internationally as a coauthor of several textbooks, including FOUNDATIONS OF BUSINESS, 5E (Cengage Learning). He has served as a content consultant for the popular national television series "The Business File: An Introduction to Business" and has developed two full-length audio courses in business and personal finance. He has been quoted in many national newspapers and magazines, including USA Today, U.S. News & World Report, the Chicago Sun-Times, Crain's Small Business, the Chicago Tribune, and other publications. Dr. Kapoor has traveled around the world and has studied business practices in capitalist, socialist, and communist countries.

This is a great book that nobody wants to buy, but you have to for school. The reason i am leaving a 5 star review, is because it gives advice to "Satisfy your needs" and has a picture of a starbucks frappachino bellow it... Talk about motivation!!

It had to end that way...

Great! Great read!!! I had a feeling things wasn't going to go as planned..., and what happen to Aaron? I got a feeling that Cherish and Jade are going to turn out to be sister based off the story her mom told but I'm just guessing, Lol!!! I'm ready to see how everything is going to come to an end.. I can't for part 3

I did not like this installment and probably will not read the next one either. Boring and didn't seem true to the original storyline. I couldn't wait for this to be over.

I liked the series but why are they dragging killing Chase on for so long? He should have been dead. I'm wondering what else besides his death will keep this series alive? There are a lot of errors which are annoying and takes away from the story. Also, I needed more details. Like how did Tre kill Jackpot? and why not go on and kill Aaron too. Are Jade and cherish sisters? I'm feeling like there are a lot of things left unresolved.
