Who This Book Is For

This book is for statisticians, analysts, and data scientists who want to build a Bayes-based system with R and implement it in their day-to-day models and projects. It is mainly intended for Data Scientists and Software Engineers who are involved in the development of Advanced Analytics applications. To understand this book, it would be useful if you have basic knowledge of probability theory and analytics and some familiarity with the programming language R.

What You Will Learn
  • Set up the R environment
  • Create a classification model to predict and explore discrete variables
  • Get acquainted with Probability Theory to analyze random events
  • Build Linear Regression models
  • Use Bayesian networks to infer the probability distribution of decision variables in a problem
  • Model a problem using Bayesian Linear Regression approach with the R package BLR
  • Use Bayesian Logistic Regression model to classify numerical data
  • Perform Bayesian Inference on massively large data sets using the MapReduce programs in R and Cloud computing
In Detail

Bayesian Inference provides a unified framework to deal with all sorts of uncertainties when learning patterns form data using machine learning models and use it for predicting future observations. However, learning and implementing Bayesian models is not easy for data science practitioners due to the level of mathematical treatment involved. Also, applying Bayesian methods to real-world problems requires high computational resources. With the recent advances in computation and several open sources packages available in R, Bayesian modeling has become more feasible to use for practical applications today. Therefore, it would be advantageous for all data scientists and engineers to understand Bayesian methods and apply them in their projects to achieve better results.

Learning Bayesian Models with R starts by giving you a comprehensive coverage of the Bayesian Machine Learning models and the R packages that implement them. It begins with an introduction to the fundamentals of probability theory and R programming for those who are new to the subject. Then the book covers some of the important machine learning methods, both supervised and unsupervised learning, implemented using Bayesian Inference and R.

Every chapter begins with a theoretical description of the method explained in a very simple manner. Then, relevant R packages are discussed and some illustrations using data sets from the UCI Machine Learning repository are given. Each chapter ends with some simple exercises for you to get hands-on experience of the concepts and R packages discussed in the chapter.

The last chapters are devoted to the latest development in the field, specifically Deep Learning, which uses a class of Neural Network models that are currently at the frontier of Artificial Intelligence. The book concludes with the application of Bayesian methods on Big Data using the Hadoop and Spark frameworks.

Style and approach

The book first gives you a theoretical description of the Bayesian models in simple language, followed by details of its implementation in the R package. Each chapter has illustrations for the use of Bayesian model and the corresponding R package, using data sets from the UCI Machine Learning repository. Each chapter also contains sufficient exercises for you to get more hands-on practice.

Not sure about this one
By Dimitri Shvorob
Let me be frank: I don't like Packt, a publisher that saves money on editing and graphic design, and just keeps churning out un-edited, ugly books by authors who could not, or did not, go with a proper publisher. They give free e-books to reviewers, and many feel obliged to return the favor by posting super-positive, but detail-free "reviews", which don't mention any alternatives, and sometimes name-check a book's key terms, but in an odd way that suggests that they don't really know what those mean. Just look at the reviews, and ratings, of this book's fan Dipanjan Sarkar, for example. I have seen many Packt books, and many Dipanjans, and I am annoyed.

Anyway, this is not a five-star book. It is not a typical Packt book, in that Packt publishes IT books, and this is a formula-ridden statistics book that would be more at home in the catalog of an academic publisher like Springer or CRC-Hall. It starts with a concise if dry survey of Bayesian basics, and then surveys several Bayesian methods, implemented by specific R packages - "arm", "BayesLogit", "lda", "brnn", "bgmm", "darch". I see good things about the first part; the second one, on the other hand, came across as not very clearly written and too superficial to be useful: for example, I simply failed to understand the author's explanation of the Bayesian logit, and that should not have been complicated. The decision to go with specific R packages is understandable, but the failure to even mention BUGS, JAGS or STAN - the popular, general tools - is not.

I don't understand who the book is for. The people who can handle the integrals, so to speak, will find the relevant R packages on their own. The less technical readers, on the other hand, will be put off by the academic style. My suggestion to the latter is "Doing Bayesian Data Analysis" by Kruschke. There is also a good, accessible book which uses Python rather than R, by Davidson-Pilon.

UPD. With the benefit of a little more life experience, I would say: don't spend your time on *any* R book. Python is the way to go.

Strong basis for best solutions!
By Hugo
This book is good, have a clear reading, structured information in good steps, exercises and references, these last two are very useful when you want more detailed information. Statistics aren't easy at least for me, but I could learn the advantages of Bayesian inference.

I think that the first chapters are essential introduction to the subject and the tools to work, but, the real what you really want comes in modules, first you have an understatement of the use and capabilities of principles of Bayesian inference, after that you have notion of Bayesian and R, than you start to use both in machine learning. Machine Learning have many uses, so I think that the applicability of the book tend to infinity, I really liked that the author gives base of Bayesian neural networks in chapter 8, talking about deep belief networks the advantages and like in all the other subjects he gives good references to go deep and learn for sure. You will understand wow structured is the book when you achieve the last chapter and see how much you've learned and that the complexity of your projects achieve, all the chapters are like a stair degree.

My experience reading this was good because I feel that I've learned and the exercises make me work with, Bayesian inference is different from classic statistics, you can you this to solve yor project needs, I certainly recommend this book, is hard to find such information well explained like in this book.

By Vincent
The book provides a quick review of all the main things you need to know when running Bayesian analyses in R. It will not make you a Bayesian wizard, but it could serve as a quick introduction to Bayesian analyses in R.

A point of critic is that at some places I felt that the author could have provided a bit more guidance on interpretation. For example, chapter 5 explains how to fit a Bayesian model and how to simulate the posterior distribution, but does not devote a single line to explain how a user should interpret and use that simulation compared with the model coefficients. Further, chapter 5 states that smaller confidence intervals in the Bayesian model is a major benefit, but when I compare the actual predictions with reference values the Bayesian model actually performs marginally worse than ordinary least square regression. The author should really do more effort to explain why smaller confidence intervals are worth the reduction in actual model quality.
Code examples are simply a log of the command line entries the author, including odd repetitions. Further, the code has some poor programming habits, e.g. using the attach(data) function is not meaningful if you already pass the data argument to the model.

Preface

The book you hold in your hands is part ofNational Instruments and Prentice Hall PTR's Virtual Instrumentation series, covering the toolbox and function library IMAQ™ Vision, the IMAQ Vision Builder, and the NI Vision Builder for Automated Inspection, which are used for image processing, image analysis, andmachine vision. It is intended for engineers and professionals, as well as for students, who want to take their first steps in the fields of image processing.

Today, many engineers have a lot of experience with LabVIEW™, mostly with data acquisition (DAQ); so they can now also use this tool for their image processing or machine vision tasks. In this book, I have tried to combine the image processing and analysis functions with a basic knowledge of imaging fundamentals, like image generation, image transport, image storage, and image compression. Although I know that not all of the tasks my readers have to deal with require this knowledge, these sections may be a reference for later use.

Some statements on the requirements for the exercises and the examples: you need a LabVIEW version 6.0 or higher; actually, I wrote all of the exercises with a 6.0 (or 6i) version (which is obvious especially in the diagram screen shots), but all of them are tested with 6.1 as well. I cannot give any guarantee that the LabVIEW and IMAQ Vision programs (VIs) work with version 5 or lower (especially the ones from the CD-ROM will not; but if you program them yourself, they may). You can download an evaluation version of LabVIEW from .

Additionally, you need, of course, National Instruments' IMAQ Vision toolbox. Unfortunately, no evaluation version of IMAQ Vision is available (only a multimedia demo), so you have to buy it. The IMAQ Vision multimedia demo is part of the attached CD. By the way, do not confuse the IMAQ Vision toolbox with NI IMAQ, which contains the most important imaging drivers and is part of any LabVIEW installation.

Very good tools for most imaging tasks are IMAQ Vision Builder and NI Vision Builder for Automated Inspection (NI Vision Builder AI). The IMAQ Vision Builder helps you build image processing and analysis applications by constructing a script file and converting it into LabVIEW and IMAQ Vision programs. We will use the IMAQ Vision Builder in some of our exercises because in some cases it is easier to get quick and reliable results, although it is possible to program all of those exercises in LabVIEW and IMAQ Vision as well.

While I was just writing the (what I thought) final lines of this preface, National Instruments released a new tool, the NI Vision Builder for Automated Inspection (NI Vision Builder AI). This stand-alone software makes it even easier to set up and run simple machine vision applications; you do not even have to have LabVIEW installed on your system. We will discuss the Vision Builder AI in Chapter 1, although it will not be used for the exercises. You can find an evaluation version of Vision Builder AI on the CD-ROM. (Please read more about the attached CD in About the CD-ROM at the end of this book.)

This book does not cover all IMAQ Vision functions, especially not all utility functions like image management and manipulation VIs. The reason is that I do not want to provide a second IMAQ Vision User Manual. The User Manual is excellent, and it seems to make more sense to me to focus on some interesting and useful functions, which are explained in the book's examples. Moreover, this book is not a guide to good and structured LabVIEW programming; some exercises are definitely not good examples. For instance, most exercises in Chapters 4 and 5 open an image and an image workspace but do not close them, which really hurts a good programmer who learned to write structured software. The reason for not closing the image itself is that the image remains on the desktop and the results are visible. Also, if you do not close the workspace, the image is not corrupted by other open windows of the operating system.

So, hopefully I provided a useful set of fundamentals and exercises covering some of the most common image processing, image analysis, and machine vision tasks. If you have any proposals, questions, or simply comments, please contact me personally at

Alas, the book was oversold..
By L. Solonenko
:
The general feeling I had after reading the book was that of a disappointment. Overloaded with handbook information on image encoding, compression algorithms etc., the book lacked substance in vision algorithm applications. Expanded IMAQ manual it is, a good book on applications of IMAQ vision algorithms it is not.
Espessially disappointing was section on DICOM: whole 4 pages with 2 pages of illustration, promulgating third party software, with not much to offer.
The book describes what image analysis algorithms do to image; it does not give hints when we want to use/try what algorithm.
It appeared to me the author was more concerned with money making than with writing a decent text.
The book can be probably useful for the very beginners, as a substitution for poorly written IMAQ manual. Again, then they should not worry of a minor issue of $70 price tag..

A very helpful guide
By K. A. Wagner
As lawyers who advise technology companies we try to be familiar with the technology and products our clients use. We do not buy many technical books, but we wanted this one because of the legal implications in image processing. We found the book to be a very useful guide and to be written in language that, while not "simple," gave us a clear and succinct, practical view into and understanding of the technology and products.

Water: A Spiritual History, by Ian Bradley

Water has long been associated with the magical, the mysterious and the divine.

From sacred springs to holy wells, and from hydropathic cures and temperance reform to the modern spa, Ian Bradley explores how water's creative, health-giving and restorative powers have been conceived, worshipped and marketed in an essentially spiritual way.

In pre-Christian times, springs and rivers were seen as the dwelling places of deities with magical life-giving and curative powers, associated especially with the feminine and with ritual cleansing and rebirth. With the coming of Christianity, water was incorporated into Christian ritual and tradition through baptism and the cult of holy wells. From the 16th century onwards, the benefits of water came to be seen more in terms of therapeutic healing than the miraculous. Through the development of drinking and bathing cures, spas and hydrotherapy, a more scientific but still essentially spiritual understanding of the curative properties of water was developed. By the eighteenth century, spas and watering places had acquired their own enchanted and mysterious qualities, in many ways taking the place of medieval pilgrim shrines. Now, a new, more hedonistic kind of pilgrim comes to modern spas to experience a potent post-modern elixir of self-oriented well-being.

Mastering Python Data Visualization, by Kirthi Raman

Python has a handful of open source libraries for numerical computations involving optimization, linear algebra, integration, interpolation, and other special functions using array objects, machine learning, data mining, and plotting. Pandas have a productive environment for data analysis. These libraries have a specific purpose and play an important role in the research into diverse domains including economics, finance, biological sciences, social science, health care, and many more. The variety of tools and approaches available within Python community is stunning, and can bolster and enhance visual story experiences.

This book offers practical guidance to help you on the journey to effective data visualization. Commencing with a chapter on the data framework, which explains the transformation of data into information and eventually knowledge, this book subsequently covers the complete visualization process using the most popular Python libraries with working examples. You will learn the usage of Numpy, Scipy, IPython, MatPlotLib, Pandas, Patsy, and Scikit-Learn with a focus on generating results that can be visualized in many different ways. Further chapters are aimed at not only showing advanced techniques such as interactive plotting; numerical, graphical linear, and non-linear regression; clustering and classification, but also in helping you understand the aesthetics and best practices of data visualization. The book concludes with interesting examples such as social networks, directed graph examples in real-life, data structures appropriate for these problems, and network analysis.

By the end of this book, you will be able to effectively solve a broad set of data analysis problems.

Dissapointing
By Luis Miguel Soares
I am giving 2 stars to this review because I assume that the author spent a lot of time writing it and there somewhere buried in the book there are some good ideas. However I doubt that this book was professionally edited and having Packt charge more than 50 dollars for this is an outrage. The book is a big mess, there is no flow in the subjects presented, even inside the same chapter there are conceptual leaps that make the reading feel like a roller coaster with basic notions interspersed with advanced algorithms. Take the chapter on Bioinformatics most of the material is about graphs and analysis of social networks, I agree that social networks are a good introduction to graphs but I doubt they can be classified as bioinformatics (in the bioinformatics there is something else that bothers me, they use code from another book's examples file without properly citing the other work, I assume they actually asked permission to the authors but I still think is a little bit shady). Even if you try to focus on the book, it becomes impossible since it is riddled with misplaced code, random phrases that are also misplaced, page filler of installation logs that contribute nothing and errors (on page 285 does that graph correspond to the code? is it even a valid graph?). Overall I kept putting the book down in frustration from all the hurdles. I am sorry for the author but I cannot recommend this version of the book.

Liked a lot, it's inspiring, discipline-agnostic, but a bit hard and lacking specifics and some order.
By yoalieh
I liked this book, though it's not easy to be loved.

I'd liked the introduction a lot, as the author talked about data visualization as a discipline, and gave some tips and ideas of diferent kind of visualizations (There's is a lot more than graph bars and scatterplots it seems, ;) ). It tries to be discipline-agnostic by using many real life examples from many disciplines. I think this can bring inspiration when in need of a way to present information hard to explain.

After that, when talking about Python, it gives an overview about Python versions and libraries which can simplify the process of creating good visualizations. Finally, almost all examples are based in Conda, but still other things are used. This can cause a bit of confussion, but I see it as one of the potential of this book, as it can be used as reference to create good visualizations in different workflows, and serves as a reference about which libraries can be used for a special kind of visualization if it's not covered by one of them.

The examples in further chapters are very good, and I loved when it talks about Numpy, simulation, or advanced data structures, all of which can be used to create better visualization, or even the part talking about drawing graphs.

Don't expect this book to be a cookbook, it's more like a big notebook of a professional in charge of creating a LOT of visualizations for different fields. I think it lacks a bit of more explaining on some specfic examples or libraries, but that would require a lot more books to fit them. Also, a very good level of Python understanding, and documentation for each library in use is not only recommended, but a must.

Great ideas but the path to application isn't always clear
By Amazon Customer
[Disclaimer: Packt Publishing asked me to review the book in light of my Github public profile. I was given complete editorial freedom and NOT compensated in anyway for the review however]

Overall, I enjoyed this book, although I suspect it's real value will become apparent when I return to it over the next few years when faced with visualising tricky datasets. Broadly, Kirthi Raman covers three areas: Introducing visualisation as an activity itself (he considers it a form of story telling), several Python tools for visualisation and analytic techniques that can drive the visualisation/modelling process. I particularly like that a plethora of approaches are encouraged, so that if you find one isn’t suited to what you’re doing, there are always plenty other to consider. As someone who uses Python on a daily basis to both model and visualise a variety of data sources, Raman's book is an important addition to my professional library.

Where I find the book lacking is in providing a clear path to applying the array of techniques and packages suggested. To be clear, there are good code examples for almost every visualisation/analytic technique (the financial models are particularly well explained), but I would have liked more explanation/worked examples of going from a raw dataset to a professional visualisation.

Another minor criticism is that it is quite ambitious in its scope (there are whole journals devoted to some of the modelling techniques covered in a few pages), but by making the reader aware of these approaches, the reader can always read further.

To end on a practical note, I like that the publisher makes the book available in multiple formats, including Kindle and DRM-free PDF. This is very practical for reading (and using) the book over multiple devices. I would recommend a colour display though, so as to enjoy the full effect of the many visualisation examples.

Review
“Bagg and Scully’s renderings strike me as the most performable versions of Sophocles I’ve ever encountered…if you’re looking for the translation that best reflects the emotional force and expressive range of the original plays, you would be hard pressed to do better.” (Philadelphia Inquirer)

From the Back Cover

The most celebrated plays of ancient Athens in vivid and dynamic newtranslations by award-winningpoets Robert Bagg and James Scully

The dominant Athenian playwright in fifth-century-BCE Athens, Sophocles left us seven powerful dramas that still shock as they render the violence that erupts within divinity and humankind. Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Kolonos, and Antigone trace three generations of a family manipulated by the inscrutably vindictive god Apollo to commit patricide, incest, and kin murder. Elektra and Women of Trakhis begin as studies of women obsessed with hatred and desire but become dissenting critiques of the Greeks’ enthusiasm for revenge and ego-crazed heroics. Two hard-hitting dramas set in war zones, Aias and Philoktetes, use conflicts among Greek warriors at Troy to thrash out political and ethical crises confronting Athenian society itself.

These translations, modern in idiom while faithful to the Greek and already proven stageworthy, preserve the depth and subtlety of Sophocles’ characters and refresh and clarify his narratives. Their focus on communities under extreme stress still resonates deeply for us here and now. This is Sophocles for a new generation entering the turbulent arena of ancient Greek drama.

An Embellished Recreation of Sophocles's Seven Tragedies
By Rodolfo Lazo de la Vega
Sophocles is one of the central giants of world literature. The great gulf that exists between the great Athenian poet's language and our modern English is vast, making a new translation very much welcome for those hoping, while ignorant of Classical Greek, to bridge the linguistic divide. Having read many translations in the past, I very much looked forward to this one. Unfortunately, the news is not quite what I hoped for. For one, both translators add ridiculous and completely uncalled for stage directions and parentheticals whenever they desire. When the blind and bleeding Oedipus asks Creon to promise him to expel him from the city, Bagg's stage direction reads 'Creon touches Oedipus' hand.' We are told that "Antigone is out of breath" and that "Ismene raises her voice." We are also told that the Choral Leader should speak "sotto voce" to his fellow chorus-members. In Bagg's translation, Oedipus exits into the palace mid-way through Teiresias' revelation rather than at the end. There is absolutely no textual evidence for this reading. Less problematically, the Corinthian is incorrectly called the 'Messenger' although he is not an official messenger from Corinth. Teiresias is made to say something close to (I do not have the words before me), "I will not leave until I have said what you brought me here to say," rather than the more accepted "I will go when I say what I came here to say." The endnotes do not explain this choice.

Although the translators are poets the choral odes are dull. There is no poetry or rhythm to them. The lines during these moments are presented in truncated lines as if this were a substitute for rhythm. The sense of stchomythia is not very strong. Scully's translation of "Aias" adds obscenities which I found unintentionally humorous. We are at one point told that this is done because modern Western society has lost the negative cultural connotations which come with the word 'fox,' but Scully's Aias' suggestion that Odysseus fornicates with foxes isn't a very effective way of re-introducing that cultural connotations. The translators ultimately seem to believe that they are co-creators with the playwright rather than translators. I find little in these translations to recommend them.

Before I come across as completely dismissing this volume I will say that there are numerous aspects which I do very much like. This translation is heavy on endnotes. Sometimes they offers a little more than I thought was needed but I am grateful for what they explain. In a few of the plays I made new discoveries by reading the endnotes (although I found the notes to "Women of Trakhis" lackluster). This volume's "Antigone" contains a MAJOR improvement over other translations of this magnificent play. For that I am very, very glad, ultimately, that this translation exists. Bagg presents an entirely new (to me) reading of an important line. What was once completely perplexing now makes perfect sense. The word 'phusis' means 'nature.' But Bagg, citing the work of Lloyd-Jones and N.G. Wilson, reminds us that it can also be understood to means 'birth.' Antigone's famous line is thus NOT "It is not my nature to join in hate but only to love." The way this version translate that line is now closer to: "I made no enemies by being born; I made my 'philia' at birth." Many readers have no doubt found themselves perplexed by that line in its former reading but now, thematically, the new reading makes PERFECT sense to me. In the opening line, Antigone refers to Ismene as 'autadelphon' - 'born like me of the self-same womb.' For Antigone the 'womb' means everything. She fights for the family. Creon's wife, Eurydice, is the "All-Mother" of Haemon. She kills herself in front of an alter cursing Creon for killing her two sons. Thus, "I made no enemies by being born; I made my 'philia' at birth" means just that, her loyalty is to the womb. Those from the womb MAY become enemies later (like Ismene) but only 'philia' originates from the womb. Creon represents the state. Antigone the family. Around and inside both of them, the themes of Love and Death play their part.

Ultimately, these adaptations of Sophocles's plays take too many liberties. The addition of invented stage directions and parentheticals are ridiculous. The language is a bit on the casual side for my taste. The Lattimore and Grene translations, despite their weaknesses, including an almost complete lack of contextual material and endnotes, remain my preferred version of Sophocles.

when i am nothing, then i am a man

"What is unwisdom but the lusting after
longevity: to be old and full of days!"
-Anthony Hecht

About a year and a half ago it dawned on me just how much Greek Tragedy I'd senselessly eluded while studying philosophy and literature at university. I read Plato, and the comic playwright Aristophanes, almost exclusively in pursuit of the 'historical Socrates'. In the process, I ignored the tragic plays for a variety of reasons. Surely, a preconceived notion of tragedy manufactured by a lofty student mind told me I probably did not need whatever Sophocles had to teach me. At least not yet. Those particular student years are long gone, and now that life has accumulated some weighty history of its own I found myself yearning to hear a timeless voice, dark and a little oracular - a voice speaking from the base of humanness. From a pocket of ignorance, I recalled Sophocles. Surfing Amazon and judging books by their covers, I was drawn to this distinguished, clean edition full of all seven plays, recently republished, some plays revised, by two poet/playwrights. I already had prior respect for James Scully's poetry collection, 'Donatello's Version'. Many of these translations, however, belong to Robert Bagg, and I was more than willing to trust him with my first read of this ancient playwright. There is something I prefer about reading translations done by two individuals, especially when one of them is a poet. Also, when I first ordered this book, I remember, too, being motivated to do so after reading one of the translator's generous responses that addressed another reviewer's gripe about some aspect of the book or translation. I appreciated the time he took to respond in kind.

The book. This book is incredibly easy to read - as in, it's comfortable to hold, balance in one hand, turn the pages without creasing the very flexible spine - that is, if books made well enough to withstand several reads and remain in pristine condition is your thing. The font is sizable. I normally wear glasses but could remove them for most all 800+ pages of the text. And the pages welcome marginalia, most excellent for the student of classical literature, actors, or for classics enthusiasts who want to keep notes as they go. There is ample white space which grants the dialogues a poetic white-spaciousness so you can make correlations, map out a genealogy, or compose thesis statements or stage notes without inscribing over or intruding upon the text. (This kind of thing is important to me.) I praise the typesetters, too, for ensuring the quality and configuration of this edition. A remarkable book so far as books go. What's also remarkable is that a book this length weighs as little as it does. Compare it with the house-heavy weight of DeLillo's 'Underworld', similar length.

For someone like me already familiar with the robust, ironic and totally vulgar expressions of Aristophanes, I knew I wanted one guide for this Sophoclean undertaking. Bagg & Scully's translations are not meant to be a one-time-read and then move on, but they are a darn good starting point. Before moving on to other translations, I'd read the Theban plays three times, and Philoctetes and Electra twice, Aias once. I was trusting these two writers to introduce me to a playwright who I want in my life for the rest of it, to get these characters, structures, archetypes and stories ingrained in my head so that when reading other translations I'd have already established a firm grasp of the action of each play. Bagg & Scully succeeded in spades. Never ever underestimate the gifts of your translators; these works are labors of love, and this edition of a complete plays is nothing shy of devotional.

Quite simply, this edition went above and beyond introducing me to Sophocles. I did embark on reading several other translations and secondary sources. In the year and a half since I read this edition, I've read Robert Fagles, Richard Lattimore, David Grene, Nicholas Rudall's stage adaptations, and very soon I'm looking forward to Seamus Heaney's versions of Antigone and Philoctetes. I was also able to read Bernard Knox's 'The Heroic Temper' with some degree of familiarity and comprehension. Having read several more versions of Sophocles, I can say this with respect to Bagg & Scully: had I begun, instead, with Robert Fagles' translations and branched out, I would be no less impressed with these translations, surely acknowledging their unique fusion of poetic intensity and clarity. And it ought to be intense clarity I go out on.

Thank You, Bagg & Scully, for introducing me to Sophocles and effectively changing my life. I'm not a bit cynical when I say that. I needed his voice in my life. My enormous thanks.

Accessible and poetic
By Reading Gal
Often, Greek tragedy is unaccessible for the laymen, full of word choice that makes translation a primary goal, rather than a task already completed. Alternatively, translation is so dumbed down that I no longer feel I am reading text meant for a scholar. So Hurray! to Bob Bagg and James Scully, for providing the perfect balance. I found the choral odes to sing to me, and was captured while reading, imaging the production in live format in the expanse of my living room, perched from my all-too-casual reading chair. While partial to Elektra, I share love equally with Oedipus the King. Aias was new to me, and I found surprise within. Certainly not my typical summer reading text, but a wonderful way to start the season!
