Parenting Solo- A Guidebook for Busy Single Parents, by Mary O'Connor

INTRODUCTION
Because we want you to have a new happily-ever-after story, we compiled a handbook with helpful tools and activities for you to bring along on your travels so you will have a healthier journey in Single Parent Land. If you can’t even imagine your life getting better after the disaster of your breakup, perhaps by reading some success stories you will see how you can climb out of the rubble of that relationship and begin again.
Our motivation for writing this book is to help parents who are still struggling with the feelings associated with the loss, anger and chaos of the single parent life.
After two decades of working with divorced families we saw a very special need among single parents: they were lacking time to sit in solitude and reflect on problems and build a road map for their future. This is your time to be there for yourself and to take a few minutes or a few hours and to take care of your needs.
The divorce process is long and challenging. It’s not like you decide, go fill out some papers and it’s over in six months. Not for most people. It’s more like you are agonizing “Should I or shouldn’t I?” for about five years, have a few split ups and getting-back-together episodes, find your heart turning from warm to ice cold, and finally, when all else fails, drag yourself to the divorce attorney. Or it may go like this: You hear someone say, “I want a divorce, and you can’t talk me out of it this time; I’m done.”
You are grieving the loss of a relationship, but they don’t bring casseroles when you get divorced.
What is profoundly different from being together and feeling somewhat secure in a family is that once the decision has been made there is usually no going back. All the counseling in the world will probably never convince your ex that you should get back together. The finality of separation is that you and your ex are no longer a couple and you lose your place you once had in society. You are no longer the daughter in law or uncle to the in-law family members. You are not invited to couples’ events. You feel alone in church were you see so many intact families.
Believe it or not, many “leavers” do not realize the impact of that decision. They focus on the fact that it is not possible to deal with the relationship any more, for various reasons, and yet they don’t have a crystal ball that lets them see the outcome of their actions.
Few people look back on their decision to divorce as one that was mutual. Usually someone was blindsided, or someone was desperate to make the other person change and couldn’t do it no matter how hard they tried.
The goal of this book is to ensure that your child does not cringe when he sees his parents together, isn’t exposed to drama at exchange times and doesn’t have to watch fear or anger in his parents’ eyes when they talk on the phone to each other. Each chapter contains a tool, which may be an attitude or an idea or sometimes an illustration through a story, and a toolkit activity and affirmations.
At our non-profit for single parent families, which is staffed by dozens of therapists, we have the opportunity to interact with hundreds of families going through the process of separation each year. In my therapy sessions and parenting classes with fathers and mothers at the F.A.C.E.S. centers for children of divorce and their parents, I picture each person arriving with a huge Band-Aid on their hearts. The broken hearts arrive with bad attitudes, sadness or fatigue, depending on the day. At F.A.C.E.S., we don’t discriminate against a bad attitude; we know how difficult this journey in Single Parent Land is. We use professionalism, respect for diversity, tolerance and compassion as our guidelines.
This book is written as a result of years of collecting good ideas from parents, children and therapists who worked with children. The families mentioned here are fictional, mainly composites of many of the families we have seen.

The Dark Side of Catholicism, by Mr Armando Ang

The book you are about to read is a compilation from many sources. It is not an indictment of Catholics as individuals but on the role of the papacy down through the ages as she (mis)guided the faithful deliberately or unknowingly in the path of (un)righteousness. As one living in a predominantly Catholic country, most of my friends and acquaintances are Catholics and many of them are ignorant of the unbiblical practices being taught by the magisterium. The fear imposed upon the faithful regarding conversation with other groups of Christians and the reading of books written by them makes it almost impossible reach them. Behind the many traditional practices are untold stories of lies and deceits whose only purpose was to lead the faithful astray. Salvation is given to those who trust in the saving grace of God through the acceptance of Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior when He died on the cross to save us from our sins. It is not by joining a church as Roman Catholic Church and other churches have taught. Many Catholics are not aware that they are being fed with beliefs and practices unsanctioned by God. Some of them are just plain heresy that could easily sway the undiscerning faithful as they follow unquestionably the teachings imposed on them. Many Catholics given an opportunity to hear the gospel preached by orthodox Protestants find new understanding and often turn away from the Catholic faith. The Bible contains everything necessary to save souls without going through rituals as imposed by the Church. The Church even goes on to add new doctrines that are contrary to the Bible. The faithful are taught other elaborate ways which they need to do to gain salvation contrary to the simple truth taught by Jesus. Most Catholics have no idea of how their religion has slowly developed from true orthodox Christianity based on the Bible into a religion that has some resemblance to the Bible teachings yet on closer study turns out to be quite different. This is because the Bible, especially the New Testament, had been deliberately distorted, extended, omitted, perverted, twisted and/or misinterpreted to make them mean whatever the Pope wants them to mean. She also refuses to accept and mend her ways in the light of a better understanding of the Bible. By proclaiming herself infallible, she puts herself into a bind that she cannot get out of. Now she is forced to continue the charade unmindful of the effects on the souls of the faithful. In all regions where she predominates, as she did during the Middle Ages, she is able to impose her will not only on her own faithful, but also on all others that refuse to adhere to her teachings. The Church is intolerant of anyone writing about her history and wrongdoings. History has shown that she will through great lengths to suppress anything that remotely resembles anything written against her. Even in tbis age of openness and free information, she finds it difficult to be enlightened to allow all views especially on the very important matter of individual salvation.

The Portrayal of Love: Botticelli's Primavera and Humanist Culture at the Time of Lorenzo the Magnificent, by Charles Dempsey

Widely acknowledged as a prime manifestation of Florentine humanist culture under Lorenzo de'Medici, Botticelli's Primavera cannot be fully interpreted without considering the poetics that expressed the Laurentian cultural program and, in turn, the Renaissance itself. In this analysis Charles Dempsey examines the poetry written by Lorenzo and his literary clients in order to give definition to the cultural context in which the Primavera was created. A celebration of Love, the painting is shown to incorporate both public and private imaginative realms while embracing the ideal and the actual experiences of the present.

The Primavera, depicting Venus as the spirit of Love and springtime, is simultaneously old-fashioned and modern, rooted in International-Style vernacular conventions and evincing a nascent classical vocabulary. After describing the profoundly humanist classical foundation of the invention of the Primavera, Dempsey identifies its genre with rustic song, then relates the painting to the conventions of vernacular love poetry. A close reading of the painting in relation to works by Lorenzo, Politian, Pulci, and other poets working to elevate vernacular expression by infusing native Tuscan with Latin forms suggests how the idea of Love portrayed by Botticelli in the form of Venus incorporates not only the ancient springtime renovatio mundi but also the actual cultural renovation--the Renaissance--imagined and sponsored by Lorenzo the Magnificent.

From Scientific American
Lucid, elegantly written, and scholarly: a valuable monograph and an exceptionally thoughtful case study of the relation between literature and art.

From The New Yorker
The suggestion that the Primavera does not merely illustrate texts but is itself the material equivalent of a poem guides the study and deepens our understanding of ut pictura poesis in Quattrocento aesthetics.... This book forms the necessary point of departure for all future readings of this most elusive and challenging of Florentine pictures.

Review
"Dempsey eloquently praises the 'philological' precision with which Botticelli wedded the Classical and the vernacular, the modern and the antique. He himself shows a similar combination of eclecticism and critical insight as he weaves ideas and observations from Warburg and Wind, Cropper and Francastel into an original and striking explication of the painting. . . . An erudite and stimulating book."--Anthony Grafton, London Review of Books

Do not purchase the kindle version!
By Maddie Bishop
Was foolish enough to get the kindle version of the textbook. Poor layout, omitted some of the nessasarry case briefs for my law class that were in the printed text, and had an overall scattered information base. The search tool was useless, and the table of contents were maladjudsted to the online setup. Will not be buying textbooks on any device in the future, and asking my professor to make the plain text mandatory.

Introduction for Paralegals
By Lotsopop
Great book for an introduction into tasks that a Paralegal may face in his/her professional career. Book does not go into depth for many topics, but introduces it briefly- hence why it is an introduction. Good book to read about if you're interested or want to know more about the Paralegal profession.

... book for a paralegal class and it was VERY good writing for the new paralegal
By D. D.
I had to use this book for a paralegal class and it was VERY good writing for the new paralegal. The book was actually better than the teacher. I believe this author writes from the perspective of someone who has no knowledge of being in law and takes you step by step into the process of becoming a paralegal.

Early Marple
By Magnifying Glass
Except for the last story, the format for each story is the same: a small group of people entertain themselves, each time they meet, by having one of them tell a mystery and then the others try to solve it before hearing the solution. Unexpectedly, the elderly Miss Marple - better known for her knitting - manages to solve every one.

1. Retired Scotland Yard Commissioner, Sir Henry, tells of three who sat down to sup: two became ill - the third died.
2. An elderly parish clergyman tells of the death of a woman dressed as a Goddess.
3. Miss Marple's nephew tells of a man who may have known too much about the missing gold.
4. An artist tells of a scenic fishing village - perfect for painting and for murder.
5. A lawyer tells of a rich man who - just before he dies - makes a new will, and now, the new will is missing.
6. Miss Marple tells of the time when nearly everyone thought her niece Maple had murdered her husband.

7. Col. Bantry tells of the mysterious death of Mrs. Pritchard; curiously, the flowers in her room predicted it.
8. A doctor tells of the drowning of an English woman.
9. Sir Henry tells a story of former Secret Service agent who had fallen down the stairs.
10. Jane Marple tells of Mrs. Sanders being found face down; a sand-filled stocking lay nearby.
11. Mrs. Bantry tells of a vivacious girl who dies after supping on a meal featuring duck.
12. An actress tells a hazy story ... but it was clear to Miss Marple.

13. Miss Marple hands Sir Henry a note with the unlikely name of the murderer; now he is got to prove it.

Overall: the stories range from 3 to 5. Note: alternate title: "The Tuesday Club Murders."

Banvard's Folly: Thirteen Tales of Renowned Obscurity, Famous Anonymity, and Rotten Luck, by Paul Collins

The historical record crowns success. Those enshrined in its annals are men and women whose ideas, accomplishments, or personalities have dominated, endured, and most important of all, found champions. John F. Kennedy's Profiles in Courage, Giorgio Vasari's Lives of the Artists, and Samuel Johnson's Lives of the Poets are classic celebrations of the greatest, the brightest, the eternally constellated.

Paul Collins' Banvard's Folly is a different kind of book. Here are thirteen unforgettable portraits of forgotten people: men and women who might have claimed their share of renown but who, whether from ill timing, skullduggery, monomania, the tinge of madness, or plain bad luck--or perhaps some combination of them all--leapt straight from life into thankless obscurity. Among their number are scientists, artists, writers, entrepreneurs, and adventurers, from across the centuries and around the world. They hold in common the silenced aftermath of failure, the name that rings no bells.

Collins brings them back to glorious life. John Banvard was an artist whose colossal panoramic canvasses (one behemoth depiction of the entire eastern shore of the Mississippi River was simply known as "The Three Mile Painting") made him the richest and most famous artist of his day. . . before he decided to go head to head with P. T. Barnum. Ren Blondot was a distinguished French physicist whose celebrated discovery of a new form of radiation, called the N-Ray, went terribly awry. At the tender age of seventeen, William Henry Ireland signed "William Shakespeare" to a book and launched a short but meteoric career as a forger of undiscovered works by the Bard -- until he pushed his luck too far. John Symmes, a hero of the War of 1812, nearly succeeded in convincing Congress to fund an expedition to the North Pole, where he intended to prove his theory that the earth was hollow and ripe for exploitation; his quixotic quest counted Jules Verne and Edgar Allan Poe among its greatest admirers.

Collins' love for what he calls the "forgotten ephemera of genius" give his portraits of these figures and the other nine men and women in Banvard's Folly sympathetic depth and poignant relevance. Their effect is not to make us sneer or p0revel in schadenfreude; here are no cautionary tales. Rather, here are brief introductions-acts of excavation and reclamation-to people whom history may have forgotten, but whom now we cannot.

From The New Yorker
Thirteen wry biographical essays about people, once famous, who have disappeared from memory. In 1903, the French physicist Ren Blondlot was so eager to follow up the recent discovery of X-rays that he discovered N-rays, which do not exist. In the eighteen-forties, the American painter John Banvard gained international celebrity for his painting of the Mississippi River—a panorama which measured over fifteen thousand square feet. And in the seventeen-nineties, when England was suffering a fit of bardolatry, a London lawyer's clerk, William Henry Ireland, began "finding" Shakespeare documents. After these forgeries became collectors' items as forgeries, Ireland met the demand by making forgeries of his forgeries, and every line from his pen remains extremely valuable.

Review

“No writer better articulates our interest in the confluence of hope, eccentricity, and the timelessness of the bold and strange than Paul Collins. [This book is] sublimely odd, frequently funny, and better yet, thrillingly factual.” ―Dave Eggers, author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius

“Though the most profound question is 'What is the meaning of life?' the most human question 'Don't they know how special I am?' Paul Collins knows. Thanks to these fascinating tales, his forgotten attention-seekers must be rolling over in their graves, if only to finally bask in the limelight.” ―Sarah Vowell, author of Take the Cannoli

“Collins's swift, humorous prose makes for satisfying schadenfreude.” ―Time Out New York

“[A] lively treatise on eccentricity, flawed genius, and star-crossed obsession.” ―The Washington Times

“An unqualified success.” ―The Seattle Times

“A remarkably lucid and entertaining peek into the admittedly strange lives of the characters [Collins] has unearthed . . . A witty meditation on the vagaries of fame and the human drive for validation.” ―Tucson Weekly

“With crisp prose and engaging storytelling, Collins contemplates the whims of fortune and the foolhardiness of humanity.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Hearteningly strange . . . Stretching the bounds of nonfiction's propensity for weirdness, Collins exhumes little-known figures [and] recounts their perversely inspiring battles against the more logical ways of the world.” ―The Onion

“The thirteen lives and times to which Collins devotes his considerable scholarship and manifest narrative gifts in Banvard's Folly are the flash-in-the-pan, briefly notable, and long-ignored ones-of-a-kind, who remind us of the nobility and futility, the grandeur and begrudgery of our endeavors. Of Collins's endeavor, however, we can proclaim our permanent thanks and amazement and heartiest welcome.” ―Los Angeles Times Book Review

A Walk Through A History of What Might Have Been
By D. W. Casey
This is a great book. A current trend in popular history is to write histories of great people who achieved success but who are not household names (consider the book "Longitude"); Paul Collins turns this idea on its head by writing the stories of 13 people whose ideas, frankly, did not have a lot of merit, but who were famous in their day.
The title story, Banvard's Folly, tells the tale of the artist John Banvard -- world famous in the 1850s, but utterly forgotten today, whose great moving panorama of the Mississippi River made him rich, but who ultimately was destroyed competing with P.T. Barnum.
Other stories include "The Man With N-Ray Eyes", which relates how a French scientist believes erroneously that he has found a new source of radiation; "A.J. Pleasonton's Blue Light Special", which discusses the 1870s fad concerning the healing properties of light reflected through blue glass, and numerous others, including the story of a Shakepeare forger, a woman's quest to prove Shakespeare's works were written by Francis Bacon and others, and the development of the pneumatic train.
The book is a little sad, because each of the characters really believes in their ideas, even though they are rejected by society. But instead of a happy ending, these stories all end badly for the protagonists -- they end up mocked and forgotten.
The book is remarkable for its scholarship -- researching the forgotten intellectual and cultural history of a previous century is no easy task; but Mr. Collins brings the reader back into the culture of the times easily. The stories are entertaining and very amusing.

One of the best books of 2001
By Jeff Topham
Banvards Folly is a lovingly-researched tribute to the forgotten, the mistaken, and the discredited. The book profiles 13 historical figures, many of whom were among the most well-known figures of their day. Each, however, pursued his or her genius to a historical dead end, and their reputations and achievements have long since vanished into obscurity. Although each of these profiles is ultimately a study in failure, these ill-fated individuals demonstrate a brilliance, eccentricity, or audacity that is often breathtaking. Collins subjects may be failures, but they are spectacular failures, visionaries and dreamers who failed with an astounding degree of ambition, style, and verve. Exceptional.

A Sypathetic Retelling of Tales of Failure
By W. C HALL
"Banvard's Folly" is a wonderful book, thanks to the talents of author Paul Collins. As you have probably gathered by now from other write-ups, this book tells the story of 13 people, once prominent, and now largely forgotten. They each earned inclusion in this book because of a grand failure of some sort. In other hands, this material could have been a tool for ridicule; but Collins strikes just the right tone here. While not forgiving his subjects' excesses or blind spots, he manages to tell their stories with a real sense of empathy. It's obvious that a lot of research went into this volume, but Collins never overpowers the reader with it; each chapter just seems to glide along. If history's lesser lights are of interest to you, you should enjoy this.

The Third Dr Nikola Book
By David Swan
The first book in the Dr. Nikola series, “A Bid for Fortune”, centered around the protagonist, Richard Hatteras, with the mysterious and villainous Dr. Nikola working in the shadows to steal a priceless artifact. In Dr. Nikola Returns the main character was Wilfred Bruce who was working with Dr. Nikola to unlock the secrets of the strange artifact. It was clearly the same Dr. Nikola but based on the new perspective he was presented as the protagonist of the story and it was clear he had some valiant traits despite some of the terrible crimes he committed in the first book.

This time the main character is Gilbert Pennethorne, a decent man who has been terribly wronged. Dr Nikola is the master manipulator who pushes Pennethorne into an act of revenge. In fact, despite the fact that Pennethorne had already considered murder he’s a highly ethical man who wouldn’t have killed were he not manipulated so heavily. Wikipedia writes, “Dr. Nikola makes only a peripheral appearance in this novel.” I’m not sure that statement is quite fair. He’s certainly not the main character but he never has been.
