North Pole City Tales: Book One

All is not sparkly snowflakes and sweet candy canes in North Pole City. Office workers Tim and Noel do nothing all day but antagonize each other—petty fighting that might be based on hatred… or a heated mutual attraction. It’s up to Jack Frost and his elf-friend Rudy to broach the hostilities and introduce some Christmas kisses, but is the Frost Prince up to the challenge of launching a new romance when someone’s trying to break his holiday spirit?

Have you ever found yourself in the North Pole amongst elves, sugar plum faeries, and reindeer who aren’t actually deer? No? Then you might want to take the time to listen to Mending Noel by Charlie Cochet. Though, I gotta warn you, it takes most of the book to figure out what is going on.
First off, the description of the book leaves out a lot of information that if had been clear ahead of time might have made the book make more sense. (If there is any sense to actually be had.) First, remember the first time you watched the Nutcracker? How confusing it was unless you had someone whispering in your ear the whole time what was actually going on – which was an annoyance in and of itself? Well, take the premise of the Nutcracker, add in a few gay elves, a reindeer who isn’t actually a reindeer but an elf whose job it is to deliver toys at Christmas time, Jack Frost, and some tin soldiers who’ve gone to the dark side and you’ve basically got the premise of the book. Add in that Noel has no idea he’s attracted to Tim (oh yeah – Tim and Noel are the main characters – they take such a backseat to the strangeness that is Mending Noel that I forgot to mention that) so he’s just been treating him like crap for a long time and when he finally the light goes on and he realizes he is actually attracted to tiny Tim – yes, Tim is tiny – well, to be honest by that time I was just sitting there listening wondering what would happen next.
It was kind of like sitting at a stoplight waiting to see if anyone else would run a red light or cross against the lights… only not that exciting.
I think my favorite part of the whole thing had to be the narrator, mainly because he was one of those gifted souls who actually created different voices for the different characters. So any time one of them spoke, I basically knew who it was. So Dave Gillies gets 2 thumbs up.
However, even his gifted voice could not save Mending Noel for me for a first reading. The audiobook was only 1.5 hours and yet it was the longest 1.5 hours I’ve spent. Now that I actually understand the story – and it took about 1.25 hours before I got that far – I have to say I liked it in a strange, fascinated, how-could-anyone-write this, and I-have-got-to-get-to-know-this-author kind of way.
I think next time I listen, I’ll fantasize about how Rudy the head Reindeer actually looks. What? I know the story is about Tim and Noel, but Rudy would be the one I would want to look at.

Very Enjoyable Christmas Read

Tim is an average elf who feels he is doomed to work in the administrative offices in North Pole City. Even though his father was a renowned toy soldier, Tim really holds no special talents or abilities. This is all made worse by his rude supervisor, Noel, who does everything in his pwer to make the elf as miserable as possible. When Tim overhears an assassination plot, he and Noel are thrown into an adventure where they discover self worth and love.

I absolutely loved this story! Charlie Cochet put an awesome twist on the Christmas characters we've all come to know and love over the years. My favorite was Rudy, the dashing, red-headed and famous Rein Dear who delivers toys and happiness to kids all over the world. In this world, reindeer do not pull a sleigh; the Rein Dears are pilots who make the deliveries themselves.

Santa is not a jolly man who works one day a year, he's actually Mayor Kringle.

Jack Frost is the son of the King of Frost and is the third most powerful creature (after the King and Mayor Kringle) in the land.

Tim, who is small in stature, but big in spirit, reminded me of Tiny Tim from A Christmas Carol.

Tim is such a wonderful character. No matter what life, or Noel, threw at him, his positive outlook never wavered. Yes, he felt sorry for himself every now and then, but he never lost the Christmas spirit. On many occasions I just wanted to hug the little elf. Noel, on the other hand, is a confused, hurt and broken elf who doesn't know how to handle the feelings he's developing for Tim, so frequently lashes out, berates and humiliates him.

The secondary storyline involving Rudy and Jack Frost was just as charming and sweet. It would be wonderful to see more from these two in the future. In my opinion, Rudy and Jack deserve their own book! Their backstory was just as powerful and interesting as Tim's and Noel's.

My only complaint would be that the switching points of view were a little hard to follow sometimes.

Out of all of the Dreamspinner Advent stories, I think this is my favorite! I highly recommend this adorable story filled with angst, drama, romance, humor and adventure.

Fun Christmas themed series with a different take on the classic tale.
By Tams (TTC Books and more)
Mending Noel is a Christmas tale with a fun twist. All your favorite characters like Jack Frost, Rudy, the elves and toy soldiers are people in this version. North Pole City isn't all presents, pretty little elves filling Santa's sleigh and parties with spiked egg nog. Jack Frost is the closeted Prince in a hidden long term relationship with the fastest flyer in the land, Rudy Reindeer. When a couple of residents, Tim and Noel, stumble upon some traitors to the City that seem to be working with the Mouse King, they inadvertently bring Jack and Rudy in on their trouble. The four of them will have to set their differences aside and work together if they are going to save North Pole City from the Mouse King. And more importantly, mend two relationships, one broken, and one bent.

I had so much fun listening to this crazy tale, written by Charlie Cochet and brought to life with Dave Gillies voice. I've always thought that Gillies voice was jolly, upbeat and energetic and all that came through crisply in the story. The twist on the classic tale was odd, but I found myself completely engrossed in the story about five minutes in. I especially enjoyed the little game of cat and MOUSE at the end. See what I did there?

Perfect little Holiday story, well written and well conveyed by Dave Gillies. Left a smile on my face, and I can't wait to start the next story in this fun Christmas themed series.
